Through Downtown Republic City II

From fish markets to phonographs, Downtown Republic City is a cultural melting pot of shops and stands featuring goods from all the nations. The train runs through it, adding to the daily noise and bustle of the area. While a bit seedier than the rest of Republic City, one could argue this is, rather than City Hall or anywhere else, was the heart of the United Republic of Nation's capital.

With a heavy groan Shuai lowered the mouthpiece of her telephone onto its receiver then slowly, with legs that felt as heavy as lead, dragged herself into her bedroom. Climbing back into bed her straw colored eyes squinted at the soft light that passed through the screens of her sliding doors that opened up onto the balcony. The street lamps had just come on signaling that dusk was long gone and enticing those who thought themselves night owls to venture out and play. Shu-shu was not one of those people. She took the night for what it was, a time to relax and more importantly a time to sleep. But tonight Tuyen wanted the firebender to break her routine and play. Her ex-roommate wanted to take Shuai out to go dancing and although Shuai had argued against the idea as passionately as she could on the telephone, Tuyen would not yield to her whines or pleas. Shu-shu had fifteen minutes to get dressed.

* * *

"Stop fussing! You look gorgeous."

Liar! "You're just saying that," Shuai muttered turning her attention away from her shimmery black dress to the half opened cab window. They were a few minutes away from the club, but the traffic was dense. Across from Shu-shu, Tuyen snuggled up against her fiancé and flashed him a brilliant, ivory smile. Shuai caught the action from the corner of her eye and almost barfed. Having been man handled by Tuyen back at the apartment Shuai had let herself slip into a bad mood. She had had no say in her choice of attire and had been powerless against Tuyen when it came to her make-up. Thankfully, Tuyen chose not to go all glitz on her best friend. Instead, the editor had decided to use some eyeliner and a bit of eye shadow to accentuate Shuai's features. Shuai knew that the minor adjustments brightened up her freckled face and put a shine in her otherwise lusterless yellow eyes, but she would never admit that to Tuyen, because if she did that meant that the editor won and Shuai wanted to keep the upper-hand.

A few minutes later the cab pulled up alongside the club and like a gentleman the cab driver held open the door for his passengers. After tipping him kindly and paying for the fare Shuai looked around her surroundings and couldn't help but wonder if they had been brought to the wrong place. The street was nearly desolate save for the line of people waiting to enter the club, which from the outside didn't even look like a club. Walking toward the beginning of the line–Tuyen's fiancé knew the bouncers–Shuai quickly entered through the doors, waited for her company to check their coats, then entered a room which appeared to be like something straight out of a movie. Everyone was ecstatic. It felt like there was electricity in the air and the moment Shuai stepped foot into the room she could feel it spark against her light caramel skin. She turned to her left and saw that her friends were itching to dance. Wanting to leave them to it Shuai said to them over the roar of the music, "I'm heading over to the bar!"

"Alright doll! Join us soon, and enjoy yourself!"

"I'll try!" she shouted back before disappearing among the waves of people. When Shuai reappeared she was seated with her legs crossed atop a barstool. Waving her hand for the bartender's attention she straightened her spine and waited to order her drink.

Smoking Dragon Night Club

Time was starting to pass by with a relative ease the more he distracted himself with remedial tasks such as sweeping the herbalry, counting the stock, prepping some ingredients that would be used tomorrow in an early appointment. Getting his mind off his mother's condition was easy enough once he was on a roll, but starting it was something different and took some effort on his part.

His master excused himself, heading home for the night and telling Yuuta to close up shop when everything was prepped and stocked properly. It was a blessing, really, to be given the task. Heading home wasn't interesting or repetitive enough to keep his mother off his mind.

Ring! Ring!

Getting a call was strange enough as it was a local shop. It was usually meant to be a place people could come, order something and be given it within a few minutes. The only calls they got were from those bedridden with no family to help. But this late at night? It seemed pretty odd. He picked it up, very timidly putting it to his ear.

"Hello?"

"Oh good, you're still up! We need a doctor here and everywhere else nearby is closed," a frantic woman explained. He sighed, afterwards telling her to calm down and tell him what happened so he could bring what he could. "One of our customers just passed out and hit her head on the counter. She's not waking up or anything!"

"I'll be right there," he said, hanging up, repeating to himself the place she called from. It wasn't too far so he could leave his cane behind to help carry the supplies needed. He picked up a few jars, some gauze and gloves. He wasn't too used to emergency work, but if he really was the only one around with some kind of medical expertise then what was he going to do? He wanted to help. Even if he wasn't a waterbending healer, he could use what he knew to help others.

He ran over, his leg giving off a subtle throb each time he put his weight on it, though his thoughts on the injured woman kept his mind just busy enough to keep the pain of his leg and memories of his mother at bay. Several people yelled at him as he walked by, telling him to wait in line, though the bouncer seemed to know what was going on and let him through after a few short questions to see who he was such as name, work place and who called him.

Inside wasn't really what he was expecting to see, though in truth he never knew what to expect when it came to places like these. With his leg, he never strayed from the quickest route and all those routes went to were the same three places: his two work places and the apartment he shares with Shuai. It wasn't hard to find the woman with the frantic voice, her demeanor just giving her away. "Oh good! Please help her!" she exclaimed.

He did his best trying to examine the damage, disinfecting the wound and wrapping the gauze around her head to keep pressure on it. It wasn't much, but that's all he could do for the wound. As for her alcohol level... An ingenious thought appeared and he pulled out one of the other jars, thankful he brought several different things with him, such as the activated charcoal. He only had a few, but it should work. He put it in the unconcious woman's mouth, aiding the woman to swallow by pouring a bit of water in her mouth. Handing a few more tablets to the frantic woman, he stood up, realizing the pain in his leg.

"That's all I think I can do. Give her a few more of those after she wakes up. It'll help," he said monotonously, trying to keep the nagging pain out of his voice. As for how much help he's done, he wasn't even sure. He usually just dealt with burns or small cuts. His medicine was meant more to help diseases in the body, not alcohol poisoning.

"Oh thank you! I don't have much money on hand to give you, but I have a tab open at the bar if you'd like a few drinks," she suggested, her eyes filled with gratitude. He sighed once more before nodding and limping towards the bar, his bag with the jars over his shoulder.

One drink after another he used to counteract the pain in his head, though with each glass the more he thought about his mother. Each glass was then with hopes to forget his mother. It didn't really help that much. An hour or so passed, still sitting on the same bar stool. He was only brought out of his daze when seeing a glimpse of a familiar face, even if when he looked at her he saw a whole different person.

"Shuai?" he asked, hoping he didn't sound as drunk as he felt. "Haven't seen you in a while," he said, feeling a weird smile on his face. Huh, smiling. He never thought that would happen randomly, much less under the influence. "How has work been?" he asked, bringing up the only topic he knew couldn't go wrong.

Spirits. He hoped he wasn't making some sort of fool of himself.

It wasn’t long before the bartender returned with her order. Slightly chilled sake with a slice of lemon, something Tuyen had ordered for her ages ago. She took a sip and as the rice wine swam about her head she relaxed her shoulders and shut her eyes. Her pink lips scrunched together ever so slightly as the hint of sour lemon brushed against her tongue. Releasing her lips she grinned and slowly reclining came to rest her spine against the bar. It was truly a drink that calmed her nerves–Tuyen had described it as such–and in such a setting it was called for. It reminded her of a time when the city had been so fresh and so new to her. A time when she felt as though the few callouses on her hands had set her apart from everybody else. But the city had found a way to blend her in–or rather, Shu-shu had found a way to fit in, and it was of course all thanks to Tuyen.

A short pang of guilt shot across Shuai’s chest as her tawny eyes rested on the spinning images of Tuyen and her fiancé. It wasn’t right of her to have split so soon to the bar. They had brought her here to have a good time, and she owed them at least one dance. Maybe two dances? Sighing she took another sip and promised herself that after two drinks she would return herself to her chaperones. Besides, she wanted them to enjoy each other’s company alone for a few minutes. And seeing them kiss again would probably send her, kneeling, to the curb with one hand on her stomach and the other holding back her layered hair.

After a few more gulps the firebender became aware of her foot tapping against the wooden stool to the rhythm of the current tune. The sensation had almost convinced her to leave her drink behind and dance when suddenly she heard something at her left. Normally, she would have ignored the sound, but then the sound had been her name. Curious, Shu-shu turned in her seat and nearly lost her grip on her glass when she realized that sitting before her was none other than her roommate Yuuta. “Yuuta?” she replied in an almost similar fashion. This was a joke right? She hadn’t pegged him for a nightclub guy, or someone who drank really. What was he doing here?

With a smile he continued and the young woman blushed. The alcohol in her system had craftily raised the rosiness levels in her cheeks, and to be quite honest she was only sort of aware of the effect. His words though were absolutely true. They really hadn’t seen each other in a while and it was their work that made sure of that since it kept them on such strict schedules. Almost as if he had read her mind, Yuuta inquired about her work. Instead of frowning, Shuai lifted the glass to her mouth and finished what was left of her drink. Her dark brows knitted together displaying the affect of the alcohol and with one swift movement the glass was returned to the counter.

“Work is work,” she grinned. She then took a moment to brush her bangs into place before continuing. “They found someone to assist me in the kitchen, which is nice. I just hope they don’t decide to mess with my pay.”

Placing her hands in her lap she leaned an inch or so forward and asked in an extremely friendly tone, “And how’re you doin?”

Huh. Apparently his presence here was equally as shocking to her as her presence here was to him. The two didn't have a lot of conversations and the few ones they did usually were in passing. Even paying the bill wasn't something they did over dinner or even in person. He would set down the weekly rent on the counter once a week, the same amount every time unless he had broken something to which he was add the estimate cost to the stack.

He noticed the slight change in her cheeks and wondered if it was from the alcohol she had just drunk or the heat of the room from so many people dancing and moving about. If he was this perceptive, there was a bit of hope he was still in control of himself even if his mind was a bit bogged down.

"Good, good. That's good," Yuuta replied, watching as the edges of his vision began to blur. Oh great, he was getting drunk. It was a wonder he hadn't passed out earlier like the woman he had came here to help. "Yeah. Though an assistant is nice, they are costly," he said, thinking from a business perspective. Well, maybe he wasn't too drunk just yet and maybe he should lay off the drinks. How many had he had already? Four? Five in the past two hours. He just knew he was going to really feel it later.

On a normal day, her change in tone would have offended him, irritated him, egged him on, but if it wasn't obvious enough: today was not a normal day. Instead, he found the change pleasing. "I'm doing well. The usual," he said, though that was far from the truth. His leg hurt, which was actually normal though this new coping method was not. And his mother... Her condition had already made him very stressed, but the news that she was not getting better probably was the thing that pushed him to drink so much. Spirits and he wanted another drink.

He picked up his glass, swirling the liquid around just a bit. Hm, two, possibly three mouthfuls. No more after this. Anything beyond this he knew he'd be in the deep end. He raised it up to his lips and took a large gulp, the liquid running down his throat that felt like fire. "Actually. Not really." He held his head in his hands. "I got back a letter from my mom after a long wait. She's not getting any better. On the bright side, she's not getting any worse either, but if it is terminal, I want to be with her. But I can't abandon my jobs. Just everything right now... they're so confusing."

"And not to mention that... that woman!" he pointed in the direction the frantic woman had been in, though she was no longer there and neither was her friend. "Called me here to help her friend and then paid me with... with drinks!" Once all of that was said an done and the reality of what he had said hit, he hoped Shuai didn't look too much into it. His face flushed as he realized his embarrassment.

Shuai knew, or at least she believed she knew, that she was being overtly affectionate, but she didn't care. It was enjoyable to see Yuuta in so rare a form, especially since they barely crossed each other's paths on a daily basis. Sometimes Shu-shu found herself forgetting that she even had a roommate. Only the occasional letter that arrived for him, or the rent that was laid out neatly on the kitchen counter reminded her that she was sharing her space with a grown man.

When the herbalist had answered her question the firebender nodded as if in agreement, but with what she wasn't actually sure of, then she pulled her full lips back into a smile and waved her slender hand at the bartender to pour her another drink. It was probably a bad idea to continue drinking, however, Yuuta's presence affected her mood in a curious way. She felt comfortable and safe sitting across from him and it was probably the familiarity that made her bold. Receiving her refill Shu-shu noticed that her friend had picked up his glass and resumed drinking. In her tipsy state of mind the twenty-one year-old figured that she had almost the same affect on Yuuta, but that she realized, even in the fuzzy recesses of her mind, was wishful thinking. Still, it was a pleasant thought. Taking a sip she allowed the liquid to settle first in her stomach before opening her mouth to speak, but as she went to part her lips Yuuta’s voice broke in.

When she heard the words and witnessed her roommate lower his head into his hands Shuai felt her heartbeat increase twofold. Were they about to have a heart-to-heart? Was now the correct time to be having one? Biting back her tongue and fighting off her army of thoughts the young woman waited with as calm an expression she could muster up for Yuuta to continue. What he said sent her into shock.

They had never really once touched upon the subject of their family. Maybe they had mentioned a few things from their past in passing, but this was the first time Shu-shu had ever heard anything about Yuuta’s mother, and she was sick. Terminal? Shuai repeated the word in her head a few times because it was foreign to her vocabulary. Terminal meant destined to die, right? Everyone is destined to die you twit, her mind lashed out giving her a good kick against the skull. Shuai winced. The last thing she wanted was a headache. Yuuta then continued and following his finger Shu-shu turned in her seat to see whom he was talking about. To her relief the woman was gone. It didn’t sound as if Yuuta had gotten along well with her. But at least now she understood his business being here; it was a business call.

Turning back, Shuai was comforted by the sight of blush in Yuuta’s cheeks. She knew she needed to say something, but what? What words of advice could she offer the young man? She was usually great at this sort of thing, but the alcohol was messing with her head. So, without thinking she reached her free hand forward and gently rested it atop Yuuta’s good leg, well thigh really. She turned her straw colored eyes up toward her friend and smiled sincerely through her long lashes.

“Everything’s gonna be okay.” She said the words slowly, but not too slowly then quickly returned to her previous position. “And I wish,” she continued resting her glass on her exposed knee, “that I had some woman to pay for my drinks. Don’t fellas like that?” She took a sip. “Wait, maybe it’s the other way around.” He was going to think her foolish she just knew it.

Smoking Dragon Night Club

Yuuta felt his head get lighter as he finished off his drink, thoughts beginning to blur together once more. It was a sweet bliss, though not something he'd admit to anyone. As this was, quite literally, the first time he's drank and become drunk he wasn't sure on anything he should or should not do. Which included talking, replying, buying more drinks on the woman's tab and... well, he didn't know what else. Everything was just so confusing. Oh good, a reason to stop drinking; he hated being confused.

The touch of her hand on his leg was something quite unfamiliar. While be was used to touching others, examining them for medical purposes, the touch of another human being wasn't something he was really all that used to. For the longest time, without his mother, he had lived a rather solitary life. His general demeanor kept him from long-term renting with others and he never really had the time for any sort of relationship. He woke up alone, worked relatively alone and went back to be alone. The longer he pressed the issue mentally, he found that he had recent contact though it seemed so long ago. It was the girl he had hired off the streets. He had kissed her, unknowing of anything else to do. Yet she had left him to return to the North Pole.

Talk about a depressing life.

The emerald eyed man shifted in his spot, hoping the motion would make her remove her hand. It was a passive act, something very unusual for his character, but he really knew that he was drunk and the last thing he'd want to do was say something stupid or random that might ruin their roommateship. Who knows might might slip out of his mouth this time. Perhaps his insecurities as to who his father was or the angst he held of his leg.

"Thank you," he said, the two words separated carefully to keep in control of his tongue and the words it let loose. Yuuta's eye couldn't help but follow the shiny glass as she moved it, the light glimmering off the drink and glass to sparkle in his eye and bring his attention to her exposed leg. O-Oh, oh dear. He really hadn't noticed or expected that. The man had always figured her for another type of character, not a partying, fancy dressed girl with a low tolerance for alcohol. Then again, he knew not much of her.

He couldn't help but manage a smile, bringing his eyes back up and away from her exposed skin. "I don't know. This is my first time for a bar. I'm actually surprised I've held my drink down this long." With no prior experience to the kind of drink, he had figured he should have left for the bathroom a long time ago.

"Wha-" He was caught off guard by a hiccup. "What are you doing here? Isn't this the time you usually sleep?" Yuuta questioned.

“You an’me both,” the chef chuckled tilting her head back as she laughed. It really was a surprise to Shuai that she hadn’t vomited yet, or become really sloppy. The last time she had gone out for drinks was well over a month ago when Tuyen surprised her with the news of an engagement. And although Shu-shu came in contact with alcohol almost everyday in her kitchen, it was her duty to use the substance in her meals, not to abuse it, which some of the cheeky waiters did on their short breaks. But who could blame them? The boss was a real tight-ass.

Shu-shu shifted a bit on the barstool and noticed that her dress had risen up an inch or two. Well, I deserve this, she thought. It’s what I get for borrowing clothes from Tuyen. Lifting herself up ever so slightly she pulled on the edges so that the shimmery dress came somewhat closer to her knees. Her attention was then broken by Yuuta’s voice and gurgled hiccup. She giggled at the sound and took another sip while he spoke. Naturally, the herbalist was curious about her business being here just as she had been about his. Yuuta’s last question had stung a bit since it brought to light her rather boring nature, but she knew he meant her no harm. He wasn’t exactly Mr. Spontaneous either.

“I’m here with Tuyen, you remember her right?” With a light caramel finger Shuai pointed at her friend in the crowd. The editor was unfortunately too busy spinning around in circles to notice her tipsy friend. “She dragged me out here,” the firebender continued, “otherwise I would be asleep.” Then she said with a smile, “You know how persuasive that one can be. For a while I was worried about findin a new roommate, but she did well. You certainly turned out alright.” Embarrassed at what almost sounded like a confession, Shuai turned back to the bar and asked for another refill.

“Anyway,” her mouth continued without her permission, “she brought me here with her fiancé and I feel kinda guilty bein over here, not dancin with her, but I don’t wanna cramp their style, you know?”

Shuai's shifting probably had the opposite effect of what she wanted, if her intention had been not draw attention to her dress (the thought of her not wanting to show any more than she could had to had not occurred to the tipsy man). As she stood up, her hands moving downward, his eyes followed to watch as she tugged the dress down. It took the herbalist a few moments before he realized what he was doing, his face flushing.

Once more, his eyes followed her hands until he found himself looking at a familiar face. "Oh, yeah. Her," he said rather bleakly. Though that woman had managed to set him up in a pretty nice living situation compared to his constant moving before hand, he had been a big fan of her... lets say personality. As he wasn't much of a people's person, people like her just tended to rub him wrong no matter what they did or said. Somehow, despite his distaste for Tuyen's way of handling things, he found himself chuckling. "Did either of us ever tell you how she convinced me?" he asked, leaning back a bit so that his back rested on the bar.

"If I remember correctly, it was at a tea shop. I was just sort of...there. The last roommate I had kicked me out, saying something about me "bringing him down". She saw the boxes I had on hand and started talking my ear off. I honestly had no idea what I was getting into, but agreeing to check out the apartment seemed like the only way to get her to shut up at the time," he recalled, ending his story with a sigh. He couldn't understand how that woman and Shuai could have managed. Then again, Yuuta never had friends growing up. Doing anything with other people was seen as sort of an oddity, one he was not familiar with and stayed away from. Blaming his leg, though it was a viable excuse, was simply a reasonable escape.

Now, as an adult, he could barely believe he was socializing so much. So much had changed. Was it due to his mother's absence? With those thoughts, to steer clear of them, he actually hit himself though it looked like nothing more that a slap on his head... from himself. He needed to stop thinking about his mother.

He stood up, trying out for size a somewhat inviting smile, and held out his hand to her. "I've never danced before and I don't know when my leg will hurt again, but if you want to join your friend, I can help. You know, so you won't be a third wheel?"

Shuai wouldn’t say it, or probably couldn’t say it due to the amount of alcohol that was now crowding her veins, but she was quite amused by Yuuta’s story. His description of Tuyen was so accurate that Shuai couldn’t help but choke a little on her breath. Gently, she patted her chest and bit down on her bottom lip to stifle the laughter that threatened to rise up from her throat. We all try our best to silence that one, came her delayed thought. Shu-shu then took a swig out of her newly refilled glass and grinned as she realized the irony in her thought.

At one time, a year or so ago Shuai imagined, she had been the one with a loose tongue, not Tuyen. It was a miracle really that Tuyen had not grown to hate the young and curious country-bumpkin that she, out of the goodness of her own heart, let live with her. Maybe something in Shuai's nature had sparked something within Tuyen's, but whatever it was Shu-shu was too drunk to think of it. When Shuai spun back around she was at eye level with Yuuta. Distracted by the color green it took her a moment to recognize that the young man was smiling at her with an outstretched hand. What was going on? What had compelled him to do this?

"I've never danced before and I don't know when my leg will hurt again, but if you want to join your friend, I can help. You know, so you won't be a third wheel?"

For a second she considered whether or not she had been transported into a dream, but then the heavy scent of alcohol on her breath and the smell of sweat in the air told her otherwise. She turned to the bar and placed her drink on the counter while simultaneously giving the bartender a look that she would soon return. Shuai then faced Yuuta and smiled before reaching out her hand. She raised an eyebrow in surprise at the warmth of his fingers, which meant that hers were unusually cool. Without wasting a moment, Shu-shu slid off of her stool and led Yuuta into what could only be described as a frenzy of bodies. They weaved through the crowd of sweaty and hormonal bodies until Shuai caught sight of a familiar face.

“Tuyen!” she called out as loudly as she could. To her luck the editor spun around and raced toward Shuai with a large grin on her ivory face. Letting go of Yuuta’s hand Shuai embraced her friend and then rested her hands on the woman’s shoulders for support. Thank the spirits I’m not in heels, she thought as she caught her breath. “L-Look who found me here,” Shuai said tilting her head in Yuuta’s direction. It took Tuyen a second before she recognized the dark haired man. As Tuyen said her hello a new tune started to play. “This is my favorite song!” the editor squealed shaking Shuai as she did. “You’ve got to dance to this one!”

With a grin Shuai turned her freckled face toward her roommate and said, “Shall we?”

His roommate took up his offer wordlessly, dragging him by his hand through the crowded frenzy of people. He felt agitated with each elbow jab that hit his person but less so than he would have normally. He decided to blame his calmness on the alcohol, soon to realize that he wasn't the only one effected by it as he saw Shuai stumble a bit. Heh, apparently the two roommates weren't the best when it came to situations like this. Perhaps it was a good sign that they were not used to places like this: it showed they had a rather peaceful life. While he wouldn't say it was uneventful, but nothing really dramatic would happen.

Tuyen took a look at him -one he would describe as more of a long and wide stare- before realizing who he was. Good. Yuuta would prefer not to be memorable to her if she made her friends go to clubs instead of getting the sleep they needed. Still, he smiled back before the woman turned back to her friend to shake her.

I guess I really don't get people, he thought to himself with an eye roll and a rub of the head with his hand. Finally, from what felt like ages, Shuai turned back to him, wanting to dance. Quickly, he shifted weight onto his bad leg to test it. When it didn't send up a shock of pain he smiled. "Sure."

His movements were awkward and lame, at best. He hoped she had heard what he said about never having danced before because -to be perfectly honest- it was embarrassing. Even the music he hadn't taken notice to until he started to move: jazz. Of course it was jazz. He doubted a place like this would be with traditional instruments and folk-like songs. It was more upbeat despite it's air of anxiety. Alcohol - and not just his, he presumed - was a prevalent smell to the place, but something about it screamed less of upbeat dancing (compared to Tuyen and her fiance) and more of forgetfulness. Wanting to forget about the city's problems if only for a night, to take the weight of the world off their shoulders. Though it hadn't been intentional, wasn't that what he had done as well?

"You know," he began, his breath a little heavy from moving around as he danced there oddly. Despite his leg, he wasn't out of shape, but with the alcohol he figured it was taking more energy into moving himself around. "This is probably the first time I've done something... different." He liked his routine. It was what he did to optimize his time and money intake to support himself and his mother up north, but he had been doing it for so long that he was starting to forget what it was to relax or take a break. Even with Shachi, he never derived form any set paths or routines.

"Though, I guess I'd prefer to be in bed right now," he said with a sigh, staying silent until the moment it occurred to him that what he said might not have been interpreted as what he meant. His face flushed a deeper shade than what the alcohol had managed to color. "Sleeping," Yuuta tried to clarify.

She tossed her bangs to the side and started to dance.

At first Shu-shu moved her feet, and then as the drums picked up in speed her caramel knees started to bend. It wasn't until the trumpet entered that she decided to throw in some elbow waving and a few turns. She felt great, however, her movements did not match her mood. Either she was off beat, looking up at the ceiling, or stepping on (mostly) her own feet. She was lucky, however. By the spirits’ good graces they had decided to give the young firebender Yuuta as a swing partner. His awkward movements were turning her sloppy steps into something seen in the pictures, or dance recitals. Of course, that wasn’t true, but the thought made Shuai feel better.

The increased pounding of her heart forced the young women to lay down her arms and simply sway from side to side. The heat on the dance floor was becoming unbearable, even for a firebender. Lowering her head Shuai let her tawny sights fall on Yuuta’s leg. Even in her intoxicated state she had not forgotten about his lameness. Raising her eyes to his, Shu-shu felt some small sense of wonder sink into her perspiring skin. Even with that leg, she thought smiling at him before making a small turn, he still decided to dance with me. Dang. I owe him, big time. It was then that the herbalist decided to talk to her. She could hear the strain in his voice due to the lack of oxygen in his chest and it made her worry about the levels of alcohol in his body.

She had almost missed what he said due to the noise, but luckily she caught the last few words and smiled. “I can’t remember,” she said as she took a small hop forward, “the last time I went dancin. Must’uh been a few months ago.” She stopped and was waiting for the trumpet to lower its voice before she spoke again, but then Yuuta raised his. From the beginning of his sentence to its end Shu-shu had recognized his intent, but obviously he thought otherwise. Tossing her head back she let go a smooth ripple of laughter before gently placing her hand on the man’s warm shoulder. She tried to say his name but only giggles escaped past her soft pink lips. “I–I’m so-rry” she stuttered before she leaned forward and rested her head on his opposite shoulder.

She wanted to admit to him that the club had tuckered her out as well. All of this excitement was too much for the young chef who was used to quiet and tea filled evenings. While she remained in that position, Shu-shu considered the idea of walking or taking a cab home with Yuuta, and after considering it she decided that she would turn her thought into an option. With her hand still on one shoulder the slender woman took a step backward and met the man at eye level.

“I’m tired. Let me pay for my drinks and we can head back? I’m sure Tuyen won’t mind.”

ooc; eep, I hope you don't mind the slight godmodding o3o if it'll help, you can use Yuuta a bit to help your next post. oh my lord, transitioning in rps is so awkward

His energy was running out quickly but at least he could say his leg was fine for the moment. The alcohol, he realized, must have helped him in that regard. Oh spirits, he had never been this intoxicated before. What would happen if it wore off and all this movement just agitated it to the extreme so when he was sober it would feel like hell trapped in one of his appendages? The thought seemed distasteful. Imagining it was awful. He only feared it would be in his head for the moment and not become reality.

Though Shuai was still moving a bit, he progressively stopped moving so he could catch his breath. His first thought was to check his pulse and see if he was doing fine, mainly out of fear of alcohol poisoning shutting down his body while he pushed it to do things out of his norm, his second thought then being one of a reactive response from his roommate. The last thing he needed was to console someone that he wasn't about to drop down dead or that he could be down for the count any moment when all he wanted to do was assess his situation.

Yuuta decided against it and simply stopped dancing. His head throbbed from moving and he began to notice the edges of his vision blur together a little more. Yeah, right about now would be a good time to take rest, he hope she wouldn't mind or fret over the choice. Thankfully, he didn't have to take the initiative.

"Uh, yeah," he slowly managed, surprised how slow his words sounded. Those eyes. Her eyes were stunning. No- it had to be the drinks. He usually never thought of people that way. He simply didn't have time for it! He needed to make money... support his mother...

"I'll head outside," Yuuta told he, jerking his thumb behind him towards the exit. Or entrance. Was there a difference? He watched as she bounced off, taking a breath as the song changed before making his way out. The air felt cleaner and less stuffy compared to the club's atmosphere and his sobriety began to fix itself after a few deep breaths, to an extent. He was glad most of the ingested drink was helping his leg. What an embaressment it would be if he fell down or collapsed before they even got back to the apartment?

He shook his head. That wasn't going to happen. He hailed a cab as one passed by, the image of the satomobile pinching a nerve of his. Rarely did he ride in one, preferring to walk despite the unknowns he might face walking alone in the city. It was less painful than remembering what hurt his leg. In any case, he doubted he was going to be able to make it back walking. Maybe Shuai could pay. If not, he could grab some money and... no, he couldn't run back downstairs only to have to walk up again. He'd give the money to his roommate.

The man climbed into the back. "I'm waiting for a friend," he said, the word friend sitting in his mouth awkwardly.

"Fine by me. The meter is still running, though." He shook his head, deciding not to close the door yet so she could find him. "Fine.

Katsumi was called away to get back to work, so Ling downed her ale and waved a good-bye to her friend before heading back home. The flat was surprisingly empty considering the time; she could find neither hide nor hair of either Mei or Hyuk-jae. Unsure how to feel about the unexpected solace and lacking anything better to do, Ling hopped in the shower.

As the hot water ran over her, her thoughts turned to her impromptu outing with her long-time friend. Despite knowing it might — and hoping it would — end up with the two of them in a quick romp, she wasn't nervous. Unlike getting ready to meet Raeya all those weeks ago, Ling felt... nothing. Well, that wasn't exactly true. She was happy, even excited at the prospect of spending time with her friend. But the anxiety, the flip-flop in her stomach, the inability to think or speak coherently, all of that was conspicuously absent.

It didn't take her long to finish the shower and get ready to go out. Feeling like she should at least make some sort of effort at being a good host (so to speak), Ling carefully applied some dark blue makeup on her eyes, lining them with a thin black pencil. The effect was startling. Her eyes popped out even more than usual. She smiled a little. Cosmetics were not her thing, but she was happy with the result. She pinched her cheeks a bit to give them a healthy pink tinge, and put the slightest hint of lipgloss. She even went as far as to find the small vial of perfume she had gotten from a client as thanks.

She uncorked the small glass container, and a light scent filled the air. It was heavenly — a musky scent, downplayed by notes of jasmine blossom and citrus. She dabbed a little behind each ear and on her wrists before dressing in clean clothes. Nothing too different from her usual wear, though the shirt was much nicer — no patches or stitched up holes.

Ling glanced at the clock. She still had one hour and thirty minutes to kill before Katsumi would be out of work. She'd probably want a shower too, she reasoned. The Fan was a fantastic saloon, but the stench tended to cling to a person for hours if they didn't wash it off.

With a bored sigh, Ling flipped on the radio to music and settled into the couch.

~*~*~

At around twelve-thirty, Ling made her way to Katsumi's apartment, which was not too far from the Fan. Before she left, she had made sure the makeup was still on (it was), the perfume was still smellable (she had to reapply a little), and that she looked presentable (the shirt was a little wrinkled from couch-sitting, but otherwise fine).

The streets were still busy; the end of the work week was always cause to celebrate for the working class, threat to the city or no. Ling was thankful. There was nothing she hated more than a silent city when she was in the mood to have fun.

She rapped on Katsumi's door, jammed her hands into her coat pockets, and waited.

Out and About
[tag: Kami]

Katsumi left the ‘Fan just as rowdy as it had been when she’d entered. She’d been working there for years now, but it always impressed her how much the people of the city had to celebrate—or, more often, how much they wanted to forget. The ‘Fan would be busy for a few more hours still, and when it did finally close for the night its customers would exit the establishment grudgingly, unwilling to return to their regularly scheduled lives. As problematic as dancing in a room full of drunk, horny men could be sometimes, she was content with her role, and it made her glad to know that her performances eased the audience’s burdens, even if for only a short while.

That being said, the Waterbender was also happy that her shift was over, and that she’d have time to go back to her apartment and bathe before meeting Ling for their night on the town. As much as she enjoyed what she did at the ‘Fan, she could never say that she felt clean leaving the place. So many people in one place were bound to leave some sort of mark. It would be wonderful to wash that off before going out again. The woman walked quickly away from the Saloon.

——

The warm water of the shower hit her, and the relief it brought was instant and welcome. She showered quicker than she might like to, unsure as she was of when Ling would show up, but appreciated the experience immensely anyway for the time it gave her to rest and think. She wondered what Ling had planned for the night, seeing as they hadn’t agreed on a plan of action before she’d been called back to work. Whatever they did, a night spent with Ling promised to be exciting just by definition. Katsumi was looking forward to it.

A few minutes later, she was ready. She’d had a bit of difficulty picking out an outfit—a simple, comfortable set of shirt and pants had called out to her—but had finally settled on a short blue dress that somehow managed to be both somewhat revealing and more conservative than what she wore to work. Silver makeup applied to her eyes helped accentuate the outfit, and a small dab of perfume completed the ensemble. The dancer examined herself in the mirror, nodding in satisfaction. Just then, the sound of someone knocking on her door echoed through the small apartment. Ling had arrived.

Katsumi opened the door with a smile, purposefully using her body to block as much of Ling’s view of her apartment as possible. She wasn’t a slob by any means, but the place also wasn’t as clean as she would like it. Mainly the issue was her books; she was an avid reader, and could seldom stop herself from buying something new when she was out shopping. Literature covered most surfaces in her home, a source of both pride and embarrassment. The less Ling saw, the better.

Her friend looked great, and Katsumi told her so, enjoying the whiff of the other woman’s perfume that reached her. “I realized that we never really decided what we were going to do tonight,” she giggled. “Did you have something in mind?”

With a smirk, a rather cheeky and un-Shuai-like smirk, Shu-shu turned on her heels and headed toward the bar. On route the freckle-faced firebender stumbled a few times, which caused a couple of patrons to lose hold of their drinks, but Shuai thought nothing of it and pressed on. The bartender spotted her and hollered before she even had the chance to open her purse. “Hold your horses now,” she muttered as she dug a handful of bills out of her clutch. With a huff she laid the money out on the counter and wished the bartender a good evening, though she didn’t actually mean it. It only took her a minute to locate Tuyen, now a sweaty and panting mess, and inform the editor that she was heading home with Yuuta. Tuyen gave her a hug, but before they released Shu-shu felt a tug at her waist.

“What the…” the words were muffled by the music as Shuai turned to face the source of the tug. To her surprise it came from a rather tall, rather intoxicated woman. “Can I help you?” Shu-shu asked taking a small step to the side. The woman asked her to dance. “I’m sorry I’m leavin.” The woman insisted with an awkward politeness. “I’m sorry I can’t.” Again. “Seriously, stop. Someone’s waitin for me.” The giant took a step forward and fearing the unexpected Shuai lifted her arms in defense and sort of kind of well…punched the woman, knocking her out cold. Before the silence could settle around her, Shuai bolted toward the door and with pale panicky eyes found Yuuta seated in what was now her get-away-mobile.

Running up to the cab she quickly entered the opposite side and slid in close next to her roommate. She yelled for the cabbie to, “Drive!” and did not relax in her seat until they had passed a few blocks. After some drawn out and breathy exhales Shuai turned to Yuuta and offered him a shy grin before saying, "So, I punched a girl." She gulped. "Don't worry, I'll pay the cab fare."

ooc; it's all fine, hun ^^

Yuuta would never consider himself a patient nor impatient man, depending on the circumstances. Sure, he could get annoyed rather quickly and easily as well, but he had a knack for waiting to a certain degree. With his leg, he always had to wait for the right moments to cross the street instead of sprinting across and other sorts of day to day things that kept him from doing things quickly. Even with his letters to his mother, he was never too anxious about when they would arrive, only what would be on the letter. Waiting for Shuai to come to the cab wasn't much despite her leave.

When she did arrive, he was quite taken aback by her entrance. So much so he didn't realize to scoot over to make room until she yelled at the cabbie to drive. He watched as she regained control of her breath, sitting in his spot awkwardly, not sure what to do with himself. She looked scared, panicked, caught off guard. What happened in the time they were separated? Though he took care of people for a living (well, an apprenticeship at the moment), he had little to no expertise in helping people he knew.

Satomobiles. He wondered who else got hit by the things and ended up like him, or if this was the situation the satomobile driver was in when Yuuta was him or if it really was just an ignorant driver.

"Kind of figured," he said with a half smile, guesturing to his pockets. His empty pockets. His eyes wandered down, from her eyes to her neck... but before it could go anywhere else, his attention was taken to her hand. Yuuta chuckled to himself lightly. "I think it's going to bruise a bit," he said, nodding his head towards her hand.

Finally, they arrived back at the apartment complex where they got out of the cab. Shuai paid the cabbie and off to upstairs they went. The word "upstairs" always made him feel sick to his stomach, just knowing what pain comes from going up the stairs. Thankfully, the alcohol was still in his system, numbing him from any of the pain he usually had when going up. Not so thankfully, it didn't help his coordination when it came to actually climbing the stairs. Anyhow, in the apartment he moved to the couch, flopping himself down there as he searched his mind, trying to remember if they had any pain relievers for tomorrow. He couldn't afford to miss work due to a hang over- wait, did he have work tomorrow?

"Shuai, I have a question," he began, his words only slightly slurred now. "Do you... um... Do you like me?" Whatever context he meant to have that question in was beyond even him. As a roommate, as a friend (maybe) or something more? Was he a likeable person despite what made him who he was? Was this night of utter weakness something he should just forget or hold on to as a night with Shuai, dancing and drinking? Ugh. Was the headache from thinking too much or the hangover? Did hangovers happen this quickly?

At first, Shuai couldn’t help but wonder if Yuuta’s remark was for the news of her punching a girl, or for her offering to pay the fare. Shu-shu had good reason to believe that it was for the latter, but the thought of his comment pertaining to the former forced her to smile inwardly, and by smile inwardly she felt a strange heat spread out across her caramel colored skin. It was a nice heat, a tingling heat that reminded her that she, Shuai, was still kind of tipsy. Shu-shu followed his eyes and half smile as he gestured down toward his pockets. For a moment the firebender worried herself that she had touched upon a sore subject or wounded his pride, but Yuuta seemed to approach the situation light heartedly, so she relaxed and glanced back up at his emerald eyes.

“Bruise?” she mumbled before she realized that he was referring to her hand. “Oh, this ole thing? I’ve been in worse scrapes.” The firebender glanced down at her knuckles and flexing them saw the beginnings of swelling. Leave it to the herbalist to point out things like that. It was nice though. She sort of liked that Yuuta was skilled in medical related things that she knew squat about. I’ll ice it when we’re home, she made the mental note before reclining her head back and enjoying the rest of the ride.

Shuai & Yuuta’s Apartment[/b]

It wasn’t a long ride, but it was a comfortable ride in comparison to the ride Shuai had taken to the club with Tuyen and her fiancé. The chef managed to slide out of the cab with ease and paid the cabbie handsomely, which she shouldn’t have done. Yuuta allowed her up the stairs first and she did her best to climb in a straight line, which she sort of managed but almost messed up on the second to last step. There was minor key fumbling and before she knew it Shuai was home. She moved aside to allow Yuuta in before shutting the door behind her. As he flopped onto the couch she removed her flats then walked over to the kitchen. She was just about to remove some ice from the ice box with a rag when…

"Shuai, I have a question. Do you... um... Do you like me?"[/i]

Whaaa…what did that mean? Was this a trick question? Was he trying to play a joke on her or something, or was this friendly conversation? Her muddled brain couldn’t quite process everything that was going on, so she ended up saying, “Yeah, I do,” as she grabbed a few pieces of ice. She wrapped the ice in the rag, shut the box, and then turned to face the ivory figure seated on her couch. She was at a loss for words. Although they were roommates they barely saw much of each other. There were a lot of things about Yuuta, things concerning his interests, desires, family, that the yellow-eyed woman knew nothing about. He was still sort of a mystery to her, and she liked that, but she wouldn’t admit it.

“I mean,” she continued as she pressed the rag against her swollen hand, “of course I like you.” Memories of their first encounter flashed across her eyes and forced some blood into her freckled cheeks. Why was she always hurting herself around him? First the foot, now her hand. Swaying slightly she made her way over to the couch and plopped down next to him. “If I didn’t like you we wouldn’t be roommates, right?” she exhaled with a smile her earring brushing against her collarbone. Was that the wrong thing to say? Shuai wasn't sure and started to feel a bit nervous. She didn’t or couldn’t wait for a response. “So yeah, I like you, Yuuta.” Do you like me? She couldn’t ask.

Ling grinned, waving at Katsumi a little when she opened the door. "Hello yourself," she said pleasantly, the corner of her eyes crinkling. Katsumi didn't invite her inside, but Ling didn't mind; Katsumi's space, Katsumi's rules. "You look pretty good too — but hey, when do you not?" It was said light-heartedly, but with the ring of complete sincerity.

Then she laughed. "I hadn't actually thought about that either — I just wanted to get out and do something to break the monotony of work, y'know? If you're hungry we could always get a bite to eat at Narooks, or there's that dinky jazz club, Lemurland or something. Or we could just walk around the marketplace for those late-night street vendors.

Street food — especially of the late-night variety — was something Ling thoroughly enjoyed. All the stalls were lit up with bright lights, the smell of good, cheap food (sometimes a bag- or plateful's worth for only a single yuan!) wafting through the air, the calls and urges of the vendors peddling their wares. It was busy and lively, just the way Ling liked her outings.

"We could always visit the Tower, maybe catch one of those silent films or a play if there's one, take a boat-ride or carriage-ride at Central Park, whatever you're in the mood for." Ling ticked off the options on her fingers one by one. Republic City had so much to do! Even if someone had no plans, it was impossible not to find something of interest.

Ling gave her friend a sly, mischievous grin. "We could always see if there's a burlesque show playing."

[tag: Kami]

Katsumi laughed when Ling admitted that she didn’t have anything planned for the evening. Rather than being disappointed, she was sort of pleased. The night was theirs to do what they wished. That freedom was exciting, especially when Ling began listing the many different options available to them. As the many temptations were offered to her, the dancer became acutely aware of how long it had been since she’d been out on the town. Places like the ‘Fan were a lot less glamorous when you were the one on stage, and it had been way too long since she’d been free to wander the streets like those who spent their evenings with their eyes fixed on her. This outing was much needed.

The problem was that, with so many options, it was difficult to choose one that she wanted. She shook her head at the mention of burlesque, though, with a smile. “As fun as that could be, It’s a little close home, you know what I mean? I spend most of my time doing shows. On my time off, I think I’d rather not be reminded of work.” She hoped that didn’t disappoint Ling. Her friend had said the decision was on her, but she wanted to make sure that the other woman had fun too.

Luckily, a few of Ling’s other suggestions had appealed to her. “Why don’t we walk around the marketplace?” she asked. “I’m in the mood to be moving around. We can browse the stalls and see where things go from there, if you want.”

As she waited for a response, Katsumi realized that doing anything would be difficult to accomplish if she had no money. She stepped back into her apartment. “Hold on a sec—just need to grab my bag,” she explained. “You can come in if you want.” As she dashed to her room to grab her black pocketbook, she regretted extending that invitation. Her place was in less than stellar condition, and she had been trying to avoid revealing it to Ling. But she didn’t want to be rude, and she couldn’t just leave Ling in the hallway. Hopefully a glance at her chaotic living space wouldn’t lessen her friend’s opinion of her too much.

After one final check in the mirror, Katsumi returned to the front room. “Ready when you are,” she announced.
