A year has passed since Fire Lord Zuko ascended the throne, and it seems like trouble is brewing between the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom once more. The Fire Lord and the Avatar began the Harmony Restoration Movement to restore the Fire Nation Colonies to their pre-war state by bringing any Fire Nation nationals back home, but for many of the citizens — of mixed Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom … Read more ›

Apartments & Warehouses II

Many of the working class in Republic City live downtown, in apartments above shops and restaurants, or dedicated complexes. Most of them are between the "run down" and "modest" variety, as there is a stark wealth demographic gap among Republic City citizens.

Most places charge rent, which could be a full pay period's worth of yuans for an average worker.

Warehouses are another matter. Usually used for the storing and shipping of goods, some of the larger Downtown Warehouses are actually fronts for one of the larger Triad gangs. Some smaller, lesser-known gangs also use the smaller warehouses as meeting places.

Watch your step.

Ren’ai and Yuri’s Apartment
Tag: Yuri

Ren’ai walked up to her second floor apartment. Arriving at the door, she opened and let herself in before locking the door behind her. Yuri was going to be home soon, as well. Sometimes, if they knew that they were going to be off around the same time, they would wait for each other and go home together. Today was not one of those days, though, at least not for Ren’ai. She hadn’t wanted to hang around and wait for her best friend, though part of her knew that she should have. It wasn’t as if they had a standard agreement that they had to wait for each other. There was times when Yuri didn’t wait for her either, and the Firebender certainly didn’t blame her for that. There were times when you just wanted to go home and rest, and this was one of those days, for her at least.

There was nothing special about the apartment that she and Yuri lived in, and it was a fry cry from the house that she had been raised in. She didn’t mind it, though. Once through the door, there was the living room, which opened up into the kitchen. There was a short hallway beyond that, which opened up into both bedrooms and the only bathroom in the place. The dark-haired young woman trudged her way to her bedroom, and began to strip. She threw the clothes in a pile on her bed, reminding herself to take care of them later. Once undressed, she made her way into the bathroom. The Firebender desperately needed to take a shower after work. She was sweaty and tired right now. It had been a long day, and she was ready to relax for once. It wasn’t something that she wanted to do very often, but it did happen.

Ren’ai took a lengthy shower, taking her time and relaxing. It actually felt good to just let the water run over her. She knew that she couldn’t lollygag around all day, so she started to wash herself. As always, her hair took the longest. Due to its thickness, it took time for her to properly wash it out. Once she was finished, she stepped out and dried herself, taking careful time to make sure she got as much water out of her hair as possible. She walked back into her bedroom, and grabbed a shirt and pants – nothing special but it would do for lounging about the apartment for the rest of the night. Checking the time, she saw that Yuri should be soon, and wondered how her day went. The two of them hadn’t had much time to spend together lately with their schedules conflicting. It might actually be nice to just relax, just the two of them.

Ren’ai thought about maybe going to train later, but the other part of her wondered if she didn’t need some much needed rest. The Firebender knew that she needed training, too. After all, her last Probending match hadn’t gone well. Although, if she was honest with herself, that didn’t have as much to do with her strength and skill than her teamwork with her teammates. Still, Jin had gotten the better of her, so it wouldn’t hurt her to train. Shaking her head, she told herself that it would do her no good. One night of training wouldn’t kill her team’s chances during the next season – lack of practice as a team would do that. Sighing, she walked over to the bookshself and grabbed a book off the shelf. With that, the dark-haired young woman laid down on the couch and began to read.

Ren'ai and Yuir's Apartment
Tag: Karena

Yuri was so glad that the day was over because it seemed like a lot of people wanted to be lazy and have their food delivered to them. The only upside was that if she smiled and was nice then she would always be assured to get good tips. And today was a good day for tips a few more days like this and she would have enough money saved up for a new motor bike. Well at least she was not being hit on by creepy old men like Ren’ai was always complaining about. Besides it would have just driven her crazy to be working inside waiting on people all day long. But lucky for her the day had to end sooner or later and it is not like she blamed her best friend for not waiting for her.

Walking home alone was not a big deal, the only thing that got on her nerves was when she was sometimes mistaken for a man by some idiot that was looking for a fight. She was just glad that her good luck was holding all that she wanted when she got home was to take a hot shower and get the grime off of her skin. Having a nice complexion was one of the few things that she prided herself in. When she got home she could hear the shower running already and assumed that her roommate was already in there so she went into her room and gathered up her clothes that needed to be washed. The only thing was that she would get dinner started when she got out of the shower she just hoped that Ren’ai was going to leave her some hot water.

But at least she could make them both a pot of tea while she was waiting for the shower to become free, there was nothing like having a hot cup of tea with honey. But there was nothing like a shower to make you feel even more relaxed. She could hear the water turning off and went and set the pot of hot tea on the table with a cup for her friend while she went and washed out her own cup. It was perfect timing while she went into her room and got some clean clothes for Ren’ai to get out. At least it didn’t take much time for the water to heat up while she took her clothes off, stepping into the waterfall of hot water felt great. It just felt so great to scrub off the grime of the day. It didn’t seem like she was in there for very long before she had washed herself clean and shut the water off.

The only thought that she had while she stepped out and got dried off and into some clean clothes was what to make for dinner. Maybe some salad with some rice and fish, it was quick and did not take her a lot of time to put together. She was just running her fingers through her wet hair when she got into the living room and saw her friend just lying on the couch.

“Just give me a bit of time and I will fix us some dinner.” Yuri told her as she made her way into the kitchen and started to get the rice cooking and the cutting up the vegetables. Sure she was not really hungry right now but she was sure that she would be once she had everything done. It was always a bad habit of hers to snack on any veggie that she was cutting up.

Ren’ai and Yuri’s Apartment
Tag: Yuri

Ren’ai had not even noticed that Yuri had returned home until she noticed that there was a pot of tea and a cup on the table, waiting for her. She glanced back towards the back of the apartment, where she heard the shower running. Her friend had obviously taken her place in it, but had chosen to make them a pot of tea while she was waiting. A smile crossed her face, and she poured herself a cup. Taking a long drink, a sigh escaped her lips. It was very good, her flavor, too. She set down the cup, and turned back to her book, continuing to read while friend was in the shower. The Earthbender may get to sit down, but she had to be outside most of the time, running all over the city delivering food to people who couldn’t come to the restaurant or couldn’t, for whatever reason.

Ren’ai didn’t notice that Yuri had come out of the shower until she heard her friend’s voice coming from behind her. Looking back, she saw her chopping up something, vegetables presumably. It looked from her vantage point that she was also cooking rice. The Firebender couldn’t see what else she was doing, but it didn’t really matter. The young woman was not too terribly picky, and if someone else was cooking… well, you couldn’t say much, could you? After all, you were not the one doing the work, so if they were willing to cook for you, it was polite to just sit there and take what they gave you or just get up and make your own damn food. “Okay,” she said, a small smile crossing her face. “Thank you.” It wasn’t that the dark-haired young woman disliked cooking, but it was always so much nicer when someone else did it for you. That, and Yuri didn’t mind cooking for them.

Ren’ai almost thought that she wanted to continue reading, but the other part of her thought that it might be rude. After all, they were both home. Sure, there was nothing wrong if Yuri was doing something else, but somehow, she felt it seemed impolite to just continue reading while her best friend was cooking them both dinner. They had been missing each other so much lately that it had been often been them cooking for only themselves, as the other was at work. They had this time together tonight, so it only seemed fair that the Firebender put down her book so she could converse with her Earthbending friend. It seemed only right. After all, it had been so long since the two of them had a chance to sit down together for one night and just… talk, and spend time together. In fact, she wasn’t sure she remembered the last time that they had done that.

The past few weeks had been so busy, and prior to that she had been dating Liu. Even before that, they were practicing Probending. Ren’ai closed her book, and getting up, she walked over to the bookshelf. She set the book back on the self, and then made her way back to the couch, sitting back down again. The Firebender looked towards the kitchen, and turned herself so that she could more easily see Yuri so that they could talk. “How was work?” It seemed like a lame thing to say, but she wasn’t sure what else to say. How stupid was that? They had been best friends for so long! It was as if there was now that the had time to talk, there was nothing to say. It seemed ridiculous and moronic. There had to be something to talk about. “It’s seems like forever since we’ve had a night together, just the two of us.”

Ren’ai searched her mind for something else to say, something to start a conversation. But what? The first thing that came to her mind was Probending, their first love. A sad smile crossed her face as she picked up her tea cup from the table. She took a sip before deciding to speak again. “I can’t believe that Amon destroyed the Arena,” she said, knowing that something that they could both agree with. They were both Probenders themselves, and thankfully, neither of them had been at the Arena that night. They had both gotten off work late, and hadn’t been able to make up. Besides, they both been rather disappointed that they had not been there themselves, although now, the Firebender almost thought that maybe that was a blessing in disguise. “It seems hard to believe, doesn’t it?”

Ren’ai and Yuri’s Apartment

Tag: Ren’ai

Yuri had just put on a slightly oversized baggy top after her shower. It was no big deal because it was just her and Ren’ai at home, a part of her felt like laughing when the question came. It was just so typical that it brought a smile to her face, her hair was caught up in a ponytail so she did not have it to hide her face.

“Oh just another day of everyone mistaking me for a guy. And you wouldn’t believe it a guy did hit on me but I had to disappoint him by telling him I was a girl.” The green eyed woman told her friend with a little chuckle, because it still seemed funny to her. “Oh well it seems like that is my luck, who knows maybe I should take a bit of time to put on some makeup before work. But on the other hand it could backfire and some people will think that I am a guy that is trying to trick people into thinking that I am a girl. I could so see that going over well.”

The Earthbender was talking while she was looking down so that she would be careful and not lose a finger while she was still chopping up the vegetables. It was not long until she pushed them onto a clean plate while she got to work on the fish to make sure that she got out all of the bones, because it wouldn’t be nice if either of them chocked on the food. Of course she thought that it was terrible about what happened at the arena and maybe it was just a stroke of blind luck that they were not there. Well they did say that things happen for a reason, before she knew it the fish was ready to cook so she set it to the side as she went over to the sink to wash her hands.

“I hate to admit that a part of me is a bit afraid of Amon and what he is capable of. How could they believe that just because we are benders that we look down on none-benders?” She asked with a bit more of an edge to her voice then she meant to because the whole thing upset her. She quickly put some oil into the wok before tossing in the veggies, a stray tear escaped her eye because she did tend to cry when she was just frustrated. She made sure that the veggies would be fine for a moment while she set up the bamboo basket so that she could steam the fish while the rest of the meal was finishing cooking. “Well at least I am getting good at timing things so that everything is nice and hot at the same time.”

Yuri just wanted to have a pleasant meal with her best friend and maybe ignore what was wrong with the world if just for a little bit. Was that asking for too much? Well if it was then she would find out soon. She put on some more water to make some fresh tea as she moved around and quickly assembled them both a plate and set them down at their small table. She was sure to pick up the almost empty tea pot so that she could throw out the dregs and replace it with some fresh tea while she grabbed her cup and some salt before going back to the table. Well at least everything was ready and set in near record time.

“So have you talked to Kamil after practice?” She asked because she had not seen him after all of the fuss at the arena, she just hoped that he was fine.

Ren’ai gave a light laugh as she heard her friend complaining about people mistaking her for a guy. It was true with her friend’s androgynous looks that it was hard to tell – at first glance anyway – whether or not Yuri was a man or a woman. Her name itself could go either way. Of course, the Earthbender’s work uniform didn’t help with things either. Despite all that, the Firebender thought sometimes that her friend over exaggerated how many people mistook her for a guy, because it rubbed her the wrong way. Not that she could blame her, of course. It would be rather annoying, that she would know, of course. At her friend’s comment about makeup, a playful smirk crossed her pale face. “I’ve been telling you that you should wear makeup more for years, and you’re only just now listening to me?”

Ren’ai wasn’t entirely serious, of course. Sure, she meant what she said, but that didn’t mean that she was going to tell her friend what to do. It wasn’t that Yuri never wore makeup, it was just that she usually didn’t to work. Although, as the Firebender had constantly reminded him, if she wore makeup then people would stop mistaking her for a guy. Doing anything with her hair would be null and void, though, because since she was on a motorbike going around delivering stuff… well, yeah, talk about messing up your hair, right? The Firebender told her Earthbending friend, though, that if she just put on some light makeup, then it shouldn’t be a problem. In opposition to her best friend, she enjoyed wearing makeup all the time, but to each their own, right?

“I think you’re being silly,” Ren’ai told her. As if people would think that she was a guy still if she was wearing makup! “You’re not masculine, Yuri. Makeup would enhance your femininity, and it would make you look more like a girl. This is not the first time I told you this, girl.” It was all good between friends, though. Her best friend knew that she didn’t care and that she loved her no matter what. After all, they’d met each other back when the Firebender was a hothead… or, well, more of one than she was now, and that was saying something. She had not been the best child, and had been more than a handful. Yet Yuri had stuck by her anyway. If they could make it through that, then they could make it through anything.

Yuri quickly turned the conversation to the Arena. Ren’ai admitted the entire thing made her feel sick to her stomach. She had almost been there as a spectator, but had been working that night. Honestly, she had been so upset that she hadn’t made it, the dark-haired young woman hadn’t felt like going, so she hadn’t made a point to ask for the night off. If she had gotten it, she most likely would have found someone to drag there, probably Yuri. However, that had not happened. Mr. Watashi had put her on the schedule for that night, and the Firebender had not complained. She hadn’t gone to the Semi-Finals either. Perhaps she had been jealous and petty to not go. She should cheer on the other teams, win or lose. She had been a sore loser, though, and part of her felt guilty for that, even though part of her felt relief that she had not been there. There was nothing she could do about any of that now, though.

“It is horrible what Amon did,” Ren’ai said to Yuri. “Some people believe that we benders do look down upon benders, because… well, maybe to them it feels that way.” Tadashi, their friend, was a non-bender and an Air Acolyte. Obviously, he didn’t think that way, and in fact, he was their Probending manager. “Perhaps, some of them feel that we feel as if we’re better than that. Fear also plays a factor. They could be scared, and feel what he’s doing might help.” The dark-haired young woman shrugged. “It doesn’t make any of it right, and it seems as if Amon’s more of a terrorist than an equalizer. There’s got to be a better way to do things than scaring the living daylights out of people.” She gave a deep sigh. It was so complicated of a situation. She wasn’t sure she knew any way to settle this.

Yuri brought the food and set the table rather quickly. Ren’ai felt rather bad for not helping, but usually, her best friend didn’t mind. She preferred cooking a bit more than the Firebender did. She turned around and took a deep breath, breathing in the aroma of the food. “It smells great,” she told her. “Thank you so much.” She honestly did appreciate it. She ate a few bites, and took a sip of her tea. “It is good. Thanks again.” The dark-haired young woman took another bite, before hearing Yuri’s question about Kamil. “No, I haven’t,” she responded, though I probably should. If we want to improve for next season, we need practice. We’re obviously not there yet.” There was a slight edge to her voice. It angered her that they had not done well – that as Captain, she was responsible for it all, for not seeing that they were not doing what a team is supposed to do, and they paid the price.

Ren’ai and Yuri’s Apartment

Yuri couldn’t help but to give a little chuckle at her friend’s gentle teasing about the whole wearing makeup conversation. It was an old one and maybe her curvy friend had a point after all, if there was nothing that she could do about the way that her body looked then at the very least she could do something about her face. Well maybe after work she could switch into more girlish tops that would help others not to mistake her sex no matter what they would have thought without a second glance.

“Maybe I will let you put some makeup on me tomorrow before work. I trust you enough not put on too much eye shadow on me.” The green eyed woman told her best friend with a little smile. In the very least the looks that she might receive would be humorous, or she might get a date so that could be an upside. Although with how her luck seemed to be going it could be suck a disaster that she would feel like kicking the guys butt before the night was over. Oh well it would not kill her to go ahead and try to put in the effort of trying to find herself a boyfriend or maybe a girlfriend. As their conversation turned to what was on most of their minds.

“I agree with you that someone needs to take him down. No telling what Avatar Korra has up her sleeve to take care of him.” The short haired woman replied in a softer tone, because there was no need for her to act like her skin was tough when she was at home. In a way it felt weird that this was now her home and not with her disapproving mother breathing down her neck about trying to be a better woman that would make some man a good wife and mother to his children. And of course she was not that happy that they did not go further in the probending match, but things happen for a reason and they were lucky in a way because neither of them were harmed at all.

“It’s too bad that neither of us have heard from him. Well I am sure that he is bound to show up sometime, we do need to work on our teamwork for next season. On the assumption that we are going to have probending next year with the way things are going.” She spat out before stuffing a piece of fish in her mouth because she did seem to eat a bit more when she was upset. She was going to eat some more vegetables when she looked down and it struck her that her plate was empty. And she knew that it was bad for her to eat too much at night so she picked up her cup of tea and took a sip. “I just can hope that things will clear up by then. And who knows maybe we will run into Kamil tomorrow or the next day.”

Ren’ai just waved off Yuri’s comment about not putting too much eye make up on her. “Of course, I don’t do that to myself do I?” She didn’t intend for the statement to come off so arrogant, but once the words were out of her mouth, it did sound that way. The young woman didn’t say any correction or anything on how she didn’t mean to sound as if she was an expert or anything. The Earthbender knew what she was like. After all, they had been best friends since they were little. No one else knew you the way your best friend did. The Firebender had meant what she had said earlier – the other girl needed makeup, or she was going to keep people wondering what her gender was. There was a simple, easy fix that for that she had continually reminded Yuri of time after time. At least she was beginning to listen to her now after… oh, how many years had it been?

The conversation turned back to Amon, and Ren’ai regretted bringing it up in the first place. She hadn’t been able to stop thinking about it – in one form or another. The Probending Arena was a place where she had felt that all of her dreams could come true. Of course, they really hadn’t. Honestly, she’d had a decent season, even if it hadn’t ended in the way that she had thought it would, or the way that she wanted. It was scary to think about it. Amon had destroyed the Probending Arena, and Chief Bei Fong and her police had been helpless to stop them. That wasn’t even as a grand a scale as they could go! What would they do if he decided to do something else, something bigger? What would they do then? On a much more selfish note, she wanted to know if there would be another Probending Season, because she wanted to try again.

“I don’t know what the Avatar has in mind,” she decided to respond, “but let’s only hope that it’s something good.” Hadn’t Avatar Aang been a child when he stopped the War? Surely, if he managed to do that, Korra could defeat Amon? The Firebender supposed that right now all they could do was hope. It was really out of their hands. Part of her was grateful that she hadn’t been at the Final, though that had of course been her goal. The Flying Koi had knocked that short, and part of her was grateful now that she, Yuri, and Kamil had not been there fighting against the Wolf Bats. It was a scary thought for her. What if they had been there? It was scary to think of something happening to her, but in a way, it was scarier to think of something happening to Yuri. She was distanced from her family, and Yuri was family to her. She wasn’t sure what would happen if she had wasn’t there anymore.

The conversation turned back to Kamil again. Part of her was worried that they hadn’t talked to him. Logically, she knew that she shouldn’t be. Their Waterbender was probably busy just like they were. Yuri was right; they had teamwork issues, and she saw that now. It had cost them their season, though, but there was nothing that she could do about that now. The Captain could make sure that her team was fully prepared for next season so they could make the final and finally prove to her parents that Probending was what she meant to do. “Yes, we do need to work on that,” the dark-haired young woman said, nodding. She wished that she would have realized it sooner. At least that match was good for something, right? “You’re right, I’m sure we’ll run into him. Either that or I can go by his shop and talk to him.” She shrugged her shoulders. “It couldn’t hurt, right? I mean, we have a lot of work to do. We should definitely get started, so we’re fully prepared for next season.”

A thought popped into her head, now that they were back on the subject of Probending. She had broken down and gone to dinner at her parents’ house. Needless to say, it had gone badly, not that she had expected it not to. Part of her hoped that things would change, but they never did and she didn’t know why she kept hoping that they would. “Did I tell you? I don’t think I did, but when I went to dinner at my parents’ house last weekend, they actually said that maybe this is a sign that I should be putting my efforts towards something else instead of Probending.” The look she was giving her best friend told volumes about exactly what she thought about that. She hadn’t mentioned it to Yuri earlier, because it had made her so angry she had snapped at everyone the day afterwards. Maybe that wasn’t necessarily the right thing to do, but it was the only way that she ever dealt with things.

Ren’ai and Yuri’s Apartment

Tag: Ren’ai

Yuri couldn’t help but to laugh at her friends words, sometimes the way that certain things came out of her mouth just makes her crack up sometime. But of course the short haired woman was being hardheaded about everything because she just wanted people to leave her alone at times but sometimes it just got on her nerves how people saw her. Besides it seemed like people saw what they wanted to see, and maybe it would be fun to see how people would react if they knew her gender when they look at her instead of trying to figure her out. As far as she was concerned it could just prove to be amusing at least. And besides it was not like she had anything to lose and if she didn’t like the way that she looked with makeup then she could just take it off.

“Sure, how about we do it tomorrow? I see no harm in giving it another try.” The slightly taller woman told her curvy friend with a slight smile. Because they were different from each other and yet they worked so well together as friends still seemed to baffle some people. But on the other hand if she had a choice to go back into time and change things, there is no way that she would because their friendship meant the world to her. And she was sure that her best friend already knew how she felt. The small smile that had touched her lips so briefly disappeared when the conversation turned back to Amon. Just thinking about him scared her, and fear was the one emotion that she just hated to feel.

Her friend was right; there was no way to tell what was going to happen because there was no way to know what the Avatar would be able to do. And it was hard not to give into her fear, but to tell herself that there was no way that she was going to run from this jerk extremist. And to allow her hatred of him to override her fear, her family and friends could be hurt by him and his followers. If there was anything that she could do to protect her loved ones she would do anything within her power to keep them from harm. While she was lost in her thoughts she was not sure what kind of expression touched her face, because sometimes her feelings were transparent and you could tell what she was feeling by looking at her face if you knew how to read her.

“We will have to kick butt next season and show everyone not to underestimate us.” The green eyed woman said as she served herself some more rice and her friend as well. Because she had cooked a little too much and wanted to make sure that they both eat their fair share because she didn’t want to have too many left overs. And sure they had a lot of work ahead of them and she felt that it was her job to make sure that the both of them had enough energy to put in some good practices so that they could crush whoever they faced next season. Well that is if they did have a next season. No she should not even allow for herself to think that way. Because it would only confirm her fear that there was no way to stop Amon, and if you gave into your fear sometimes it could paralyze you.

“That sounds good,” she responded. The whole make-up thing had never really been Yuri’s forte, and of course, she was more than willing to help her out. “You actually have to listen to me this time, though.” It didn’t make any difference if she put makeup on her if the other girl would choose to ignore her. It wasn’t as if there was anything wrong with not wearing makeup. She didn’t personally understand it, though. She enjoyed the girly stuff – nice clothes, makeup, the works. She supposed that was something that her mother drilled into her. The two of them used to get along really well, but her father continually brought up the whole “Probending thing”, and now it was poisoning her relationship with her mother. It was frustrating, so it was easier for her to just stay away all together.

As much as Ren’ai loved Yuri, they were completely different people. The Earthbender had a tendency to be much calmer, which offset the Firebender’s temper. She supposed that’s why they made such a good team, the two of them. For instance, her positive attitude after she told her what her parents had said only brought a smile to her face. She was right, of course. That was all they could do. The last season was behind them, and nothing they did could change what had happened. Yes, they had screwed up, but it wouldn’t happen again, not if this Captain had anything to say about it. “That’s right,” she said. “I’ll try and get ahold of Kamil, because we need to start practicing if we’re going to make our mark next season.” All they had to do was get Kamil and begin practicing. Everything else would fall into place after that, she was sure about it.

———————

The next few days went rather well. Ren’ai managed to get ahold of Kamil, and they scheduled their first practice. Tadashi showed up later, and she apologized for not mentioning that she had a boyfriend to him – not that it mattered, as they broken up. They scheduled another practice a few days after that, and that’s when everything started to go downhill from there. The Waterbender never showed up for the next practice, and neither did their so-called manager. The dark-haired young woman was so upset at herself, feeling that for sure she had something to do with it. Every Waterbender that they’d ever lost had been because of her. What about Tadashi, though? He was not just their manager, he was their friend! She didn’t know what to do. The Firebender nearly lost her job the next day because she was pissed off at the world.

A customer complained about her attitude, and Mr. Watashi had gotten pissed off, and Ichiro told her to take it down a few notches or she was going to be on trouble. Ren’ai managed to mask her anger, at least at work. She didn’t want to lose her job – couldn’t lose it, if truth be told. Yuri couldn’t afford to pay the rent by herself. If she got fired, then she would have to ask for help from her parents. That was not going to happen. So, she told herself that just because they had both missed one meeting didn’t mean that things were done completely. It made her feel better, so she stopped being so angry at all the time. The next day on her day off, she went to find Kamil and Tadashi. Afterwards, the young woman almost wished that she hadn’t because living in her “everything will be okay” dream world was better.

Both Kamil and Tadashi were done, and they both used the same excuse – they were too busy to fully devote the time needed to practice for Probending. Ren’ai didn’t use what had changed, because they both had time last season. Was it fear about the Probending season being destroyed? There was no way to know, and there was nothing that she could do. After talking to them, the Firebender went home to her apartment. She made herself a cup of hot tea, and just sat down on the couch, and fumed. Yuri would be home soon, and oh boy, did she have something to tell her…

Ren’ai and Yuri’s Apartment

Yuri had been happy to have regular practices with the whole team, but it seemed like something was off. But of course she had to tell herself that she was just overthinking things like she normally did, it was not like the sky was going to fall down right? It was just a little hard at times for the green eyed girl to remind herself to keep on looking on the bright side and keep a smile on her face. It was funny for the past two days it had seemed like everything was going good. Heck she had even let Ren’ai help her with a little bit of makeup, just some eye shadow and some light lip color that wouldn’t clash with her tanned skin. Of course her short hair couldn’t be helped at all, but the makeup had seemed to help a little bit so that most people did seem to recognize her as the female that she is.

The young woman had been having such a wonderful day; she had even been on a roll on getting good tips. On her way home she had stopped by the corner shop and picked up some of her best friends favorite steamed buns for dinner. With that done all she would need to do was to mix a salad and it would be a complete meal. She was just softly humming a song to herself as she walked into the apartment and saw that her roommate was already there. And it didn’t look like she was in a good mood so far, maybe it was another old man that hit on her.

“Hey what’s going on?” The tall woman asked as she sat down next to her friend and set the bag that had dinner on it on the table. Because she was sure that her day was going to go to hell in a hurry for sure. The earthbender knew that she didn’t need a mirror to know that a concerned look had settled on her face. And all she needed to do was sit there and her strong willed friend would for sure tell her what was on her mind. And with hopes it would be something that they could fix in a hurry because there were too many things that could go wrong at any time of the day. The tension in the air made her run her fingers through her short hair and almost wish that she hadn’t cut it just to prove that she could do what she wanted when she moved out.

Ren’ai had been sitting there on the couch, positively fuming. She hadn’t even noticed Yuri walk in until the Earthbender spoke to her, asking her what was wrong. Of course, her best friend would be able to tell when something was wrong. They had, after all, been friends since they were children. It only made sense. It also didn’t hurt that the Firebender’s temper made it very easy to see when she was angry or aggravated. She certainly didn’t hide it all that was for sure. Not able to take it anymore, the young woman stood up, pacing in front of the coffee table. She had an ulterior motive, too, though. The dark-haired young woman knew how she got, and didn’t want Yuri right next to her if she lost control.

It took Ren’ai a few minutes before she could speak; she was even more angry that when she’d gotten home, if that was possible. “So, I’m sure you were wondering what happened to Tadashi and Kamil at our last practice, right?” Of course Yuri remembered; that was a given. The team was practically their lives. “Well, I was furious, right? Of course, I’m Captain, it’s my job to angry if one of the team doesn’t show up.” She continued to pace, her hands wildly gesturing as she talked. She was nowhere near close enough to hit her best friend, but the look in her eyes was fierce and wild – never a good thing for the hotheaded Firebender on a good day, and this was so far from one it wasn’t even funny.

Ren’ai kept looking at Yuri as she spoke, pacing still. “Well, I calmed down, you could tell,” she said, the tone in her voice saying that she clearly thought it was obvious. To Yuri it was, probably. “I thought I should go and find them, and…” She gave a harsh laugh, and stopped pacing, facing her fellow Probender. “They quit.” Her voice held a hint of finality, showing that there was no chance that she was wrong. “They’re both ‘busy’.” The Firebender clearly had no love of their excuse, and felt that they had both just gotten stupid on them. In her mind, all she could think right now was how furious she was… and much her father would say how right he was if she ever saw him again.

Yuri just sat there and absorbed the new information that was given to her. It was like her worst fears had come to life, there was only so much that they had control over and there team was now in shambles because the guys quit. Oh it just pissed her off but she forced herself to keep her breathing steady and shallow to keep herself from showing how upset she really was. It was the green eyed girl’s role to be the one to keep a level head, and if she let her temper get the better of her while Ren’ai was worked up it wouldn’t be good at all. So she let her best friend blow off steam not even trying to get the other girl to sit down. It was true that they all had lives and that Probending was a passion of theirs, and it was very disappointing that their teammate had quit on them as well as their manager.

It was a little hard for her to just sit there and let her roommate rant and pace while she just sat there with her hands setting on top of her lap. Oh it was hard not to allow her hands to ball into fists of annoyance while dark thoughts of what she would love to do to the deserters. Her temper once awakened was hard to deal with; as her friend came to the end of her rant a soft sigh escaped her. It was the only noise that she had yet to make. Because the last thing that she should do was add fuel to the fire, because she was not sure what she can say that wouldn’t get her friend even more fired up.

“Seems like we are back to square one to find another waterbender, and as far as managers go I am sure that we can find another one. Please sit down and have a steamed bun while I make us some fresh tea.” It seemed like that was all that she could do at the moment because if anything she just wanted to go and work out at the moment because she didn’t have any better way to relieve all of the tension that she felt bunching up her shoulders. Her voice was soft because she was so scared of raising her voice, although she knew that her friend would know how really upset she was about the whole thing.

Yuri’s calm attitude right now as annoying Ren’ai even more. She wanted to see the same rage on her friend’s face that she knew was on her own. Why wasn’t she angry and upset? This was horrible! They had had something good going with Kamil, and now he was too busy? That seemed like a sell out to her to quit for whatever reason. And as for Tadashi… that angered her even more because he was their friend – or supposed to be anyway. So much for that, it seemed. It seemed like the only person that she could truly count on was Yuri, and she didn’t seem nearly as upset about this as the Firebender thought she should be. This was horrible, and here she was, being all calm and collected.

Ren’ai glared daggers at Yuri, and for a moment, her anger turned on the Earthbender – internally anyway. That was until a thought entered her head – her parents. A look of despair crossed her face. Groaning, she sat down on the couch, slouching. If her parents found out about this… Of course, they would, the dark-haired young woman couldn’t hide it from them forever. If simply not making it all the way was enough to tell her that they thought she should focus her thoughts elsewhere, then finding out that her friend/manager had abandoned them as well as the first steady Waterbender they’d ever had, it would give them even more ammunition to use against her. How was she ever going to face them again? Now, she was almost starting to think that maybe they were right.

Ren’ai heard Yuri’s words, and knew that her best friend was just as upset as she was. It just wouldn’t do any good for both of them to be raging. “I guess so,” she said, agreeing that they were back at square one. It wasn’t that they didn’t know Waterbenders – her brothers were all Waterbenders, and Ichiro form work as, too. “I don’t know, maybe my parents are right… Maybe this a sign that we shouldn’t be doing this and that I should go along with their grand scheme that they have in plan for me – marry a rich boy, and have a lots of a rich babies and be a pretty trophy wife like my mother.” That was ironic, though, considering her mother had always told her to stand up for herself. “It’s just… I can’t truly believe that, you know? I mean, we did good last season! For a first season, it wasn’t bad. It’s just… can we really start over with someone and have them fit in as well as Kamil did?”

Ren’ai and Yuri’s Apartment
Tag: Ren’ai

Yuri hated it when Ren’ai looked at her the way that she did, because for one she did not deserve that look at all. And if looks could kill then she would be deader than a doornail at the moment and many times during their long friendship to boot. But then she couldn’t help but to notice the change of expression on her friends face, at least it wasn’t the same murderous look that she had before. It had seemed like the firebender had the wind taken out of her sails as she sat down on the couch next to her. It just seemed a little sad like all of the fight had gone out of her this time, and the fire as well. The she started to agree with her and thinking that maybe her mother had been right about everything from the start.

The whole thing was just ridiculous for sure, and she wasn’t going to let either one of them admit to their family’s that they had ended flat on their backsides and that they had been right from the get go. “Don’t think that way, all we need to do is get our butts back out there and we can do it again. Heck I am sure that we can find an even better waterbender this time. And who knows, maybe we can have an all-girl team this next season?”

The green eyed young woman told her friend as she got up and moved the short distance to their little kitchen and got the tea pot ready and started to boil some water to make the tea. “Because I will be damned if we are going to admit defeat to our families by crawling on our bellies to them about this little set back. And I shudder to think about the middle aged man that my parents are almost willing to make me marry so I will not be an old maid.”

It was true that her parents were getting a little desperate when it came to finding her a husband so that they could at least have one grandchild from her. But the thought of having that old goat touch her made her skin crawl and made her think about having a boulder drop on his head the first time that he even dared to touch her.

A sigh escaped Ren’ai’s lips as she listened to what Yuri was saying to her. Perhaps her best friend had a point. After all, they’d never let lack of a Waterbender get them down before, why should they start now? Not to mention the fact that the Firebender completely agreed that she did not want to go and tell her parents that they had been right. In fact, she wasn’t sure that she should even tell them about Kamil and Tadashi abandoning them. She could hear them both now. They would tell her oh, well, of course you see now… this is a sign that you never supposed to do this, now get married and have babies like a good little trophy wife.

Ugh, of course she wanted to get married and have kids one day – not one day soon, and she was never going to be a trophy wife like her mother – which was, despite her always telling her daughter to stand up for yourself. Ren’ai nodded her head. “You know what, Yuri, you’re right,” she told the Earthbender. “Nothing has never stopped us before and it’s not about to start now.” She felt some of her fire coming back, and she couldn’t believe that she had let all of this get to her! She had never let anything take away her passion for being a Probender, and she would be damned if she let the idiocy of those two boys change her. She was better than that – they were better than that.

“I can’t believe I let all of this get to me,” Ren’ai told Yuri. A smirk crossed her face at the thought of an all-girl team. “Maybe we need another girl, since guys obviously are not meant to be with us on our team.” There was no telling if a girl would fit in with her. After all, the Earthbender had never been the problem. She was – her and her temper. But, history had shown that it didn’t matter if it was a guy or a girl, because gender was no factor in whether or not someone could get along with her. After all, look at what had happened to Tadashi and Kamil. They were both guys, and had both abandoned them and their team – and they had both fit in rather well. Maybe it didn’t matter if they really fit in or not as long as they stuck around and they could work well as a team?

Ren’ai took a deep breath. “We should start looking as soon as possible,” she told Yuri. “Maybe tomorrow we can go practicing?” If she remembered correctly, they were both off tomorrow. That was an interesting, thought. “We should keep at top form. If we find a Waterbender soon, great, but either way, we must keep up in top form. I don’t know about you, but your finish last season doesn’t fly with me.” Some may say that it was good for a first season, but it was not good for her, and she was fairly certain that it wasn’t good for her best friend, either. That, and any success in the Probending circuit would teach her father and mother that they shouldn’t count her out, and that she was going to follow her dreams regardless of what they thought for her.
