Inns, Restaurants, & Food Stalls II

Everyone's got to eat, right? Well, Downtown Republic City is famed for its melting pot of culinary goodness. You can find a wide array of delectable delights here, from Fire Nation kimchi to Air Nomad pastries, and anything in between.

There are Inns, which offer food and lodging for those who need. Meals are often included in the price of the room, depending on the length of your stay. You can also visit just to eat, and the prices are reasonable.

There are Restaurants, which offer weary travellers a chance to sit and rest their feet while enjoying a nice, hot meal, or locals a chance to relax and enjoy someone else cooking for a change. These establishments are indoors, often a bit more upscale --and therefore slightly more pricey-- than inns or food stalls. You pay for what you get, though! The food is delicious, and the ambiance is classy.

Lastly, there are food stalls. Food stalls line the streets of Downtown Republic City, offering quick and cheap food for the person on-the-go. The food is often better than most people expect, and many stall owners take great pride and care in their work. Street food is a popular snack, especially for those around late-night, as food stalls tend to stay open later than most restaurants.

Hitomi Bread and Goods
tags: niko

"It's opening time, Airi," the girl heard her mother say, "and I need you to help around here, this time."

The light haired girl rubbed her eyes as she slid out of bed, almost literally, onto the floor of her room, bumping into random items as she reached the ground. Pushing herself off the ground, she reached out blindly to find a set of clothes for the day she didn't mind getting flour all over. That stuff was always a tricky thing to get out of fabric especially when you deal with so much flour. It would just clump up and stick to everything! It wasn't impossible to get it out, it was simply something she didn't want to put too much of her energy into.

After picking out a fitting, white, short sleeved shirt and a pair of old, tan short, not bothering to put on her gloves, she ran down the stairs barefoot only to see the clock: it was ten in the morning! Niko was going to come over soon! She sprinted right back up the stairs and exchanged her trashed shorts for a gray skirt. When she helped in the kitchen, she usually didn't care what condition her clothes were in seeing as the only people that would see her was her family. After hiring the boy for eighteen yuans a day for the days they needed an extra hand around the place, that meant she couldn't walk around like she just got out of bed... which she was.

She pulled her hair back up into a messy bun on the top of her head so it wouldn't get in the way of her cooking and went right back down into the kitchen, pulling an apron on and washing her hands and arms in the sink for a bit. Airi, as her mother entered the kitchen with her apron already on, pulled out the large bags of flour, thankful that she had retrieved enough flour a few days ago, taking out a few cups of flour and tossing it on the wooden counter. Eggs were added, as well as warm water, oil, a bit of sugar and a pinch of salt right on top of pile of flour. As often as they baked the food -which was all day- they couldn't constantly use bowls and using a ton of water to wash them. IT was much easier to hand mix it together and clean the counters hourly.

Digging her hands into the pile of ingredients, she began to knead it all in. It was a messy business, but, hey! someone had to do it. The longer she kneaded the dough, the harder it got, the liquid binding the loose flour together. She regretted now having stuck to bread making to do simple errands, her arms began to hurt. She thought running around to get the heavy packs of flour had been enough to keep the muscles; apparently not. In the middle of the process of bread making, she head a knock on the back door. "That's probably him," she chimed, leaving her creation on the table to go to the door. Her hands had dough stuck to them under her nails, between her fingers and on the palms of her hands so to open the door, she used her elbow to push down the handle and open it by pushing it with her shoulder.

Airi quickly went back to her station, though, knowing she had to keep up with the dough. "Do you think you could start by wiping down the other counters?" she asked hopefully. It looked like her parents had put in time in the kitchen before she had woken, but hadn't wiped away the dough that stuck to the counter tops, which dried into something that was a pain to get off. "How are you?" she casually added, though genuinely concerned how he was.

Hitoma Bread and Goods

Niko had spent the majority of the night fidgeting and trying to sleep, but it was useless! He wanted to sleep, he really did, but with the prospect of a new adventure literally on the horizon it was impossible. Sometime during the night, exhaustion overtook his excitement and he slipped for a few short hours into his dreams. When the sun’s long rays crawled across young man’s face he awoke and stretched his arms over his head.

The day had finally arrived! Niko went through his morning routine quickly and darted about the room picking up articles of clothing in his search for something to wear. His thoughts were so focused on seeing Airi and getting started that morning that he didn’t have time to think about trivial things such as breakfast or shoes. Everything was going smoothly in a crazy, hectic, just-got-up sort of way. He left the house with plenty of time to spare so when he inevitably got lost he could somehow make it to the bakery on time. Once outside, however, Niko decided that shoes were probably very important and climbed the stairs to retrieve them. Before leaving for the second time he looked around for anything else that he had forgotten. He did a mental checklist of his person and determined that with shirt, pants, and shoes he was ready to go.

The City was a vision in green and gold that morning. The day was young and the few who braved the early morning streets strode with purpose. For the first time since leaving home Niko felt like one of them again: the people who have a reason to work and the ones who strove to make a difference. Even if it was just a part-time job, the sixteen year old made it out to be glamorous and extremely vital. Besides, anything was better than sitting at home all day. The last time they had met, which also happened to be the first time, Airi had shown him the way to her family’s bakery and left him with a pretty good idea of how to get there. The smell of warm ovens and bread yeast was enough direction alone. As Niko neared the little building he became intoxicated by the aroma. The building itself was easy enough to find, but Niko wasn’t quite sure how to get to the front of it. He was standing at the back door wondering how he got into these situations when a rather clever thought came to mind. “As an official employee this is probably the most appropriate way to enter anyway!”

He knocked, but didn’t have to wait long before the door was flung open. “Good morning!” he greeted quickly then said “—oh whoa!” Before seeing the sticky and floury mess that coated Airi’s arms, he had never imagined that being a baker was a messy profession. The whole interior of the kitchen was a testament to how wrong he had been. The room was warm and filled with a yellow light, but that all came after the fact that it was all covered in hard, crusty, floury dough bits. The stuff was everywhere and it was all hardened! To Niko, it looked as though the family had stayed up all night making the mess because he just could not imagine waking up early enough to do that much damage when the sun was barely in the sky. Go figure that the first thing she asked him to do was clean it up. He slipped an apron on and reluctantly grabbed a wet rag. “You got it, boss.” he said as he began to scrub. It was a lot more strenuous than it looked, but his reward was a few square inches of shiny clean countertop. Though it was less than one percent of what had to be done, it was a success nonetheless. “I am doing wonderfully actually!” he answered, “but boy, I don’t envy you all! Do you wake up this early every day?!?” he asked in mock exasperation.

A Semi-Fancy Restaurant

Ren’ai showed up the restaurant – it was a nice restaurant, but a step up from her workplace, Watashi’s. It was not as fancy as Kuang’s Cuisine, though. She had suggested it, because her father was paying for it, and she didn’t want it to seem like she was trying to get her money’s worth or anything. After all, her father was paying for their tournament costs, anyway. She walked into the restaurant, and up to the host stand. The hostess smiled at her. “I’m with Tasukete and the Dragon Hawks party.” The hostess smiled at her, and then led her to a separate area that her father had rented for the party. It wasn’t cut off from everyone else, but it would get them a bit of a sense of privacy. It wasn’t as if people couldn’t still walk up to them if they wanted to, but they were still not with everyone else. Of course, once they were at the separate area, her parent’s had already arrived.

Her father, Tasukete, was an older man, had chosen to wear a pair of black slacks, a red shirt. His hair, which was once black, was now mostly gray, and fell on his shoulders. His eyes were the same gold as his only daughter, and his pale skin was the same, as well. It was evident that he had been a good looking man in his prime, but as he was turning sixty next year, that prime had passed. He was in decent shape for a man his age, but was, of course, not as strong or as fast as he used to be. He had still taught his daughter all of the classical training that she knew. The woman sitting beside him, Kyouko, was obviously many years younger, twelve in fact. She was wearing a simple, black dress. She was still rather thin, and her hair was still dark brown, and pulled into a stylish ponytail. Her eyes were a bright blue, and her skin tan, like most Waterbenders.

Ren’ai smiled at her parents. “Hi, mom, hi dad,” she said. “Thanks for this.” Her parents said that she deserved it, but she noticed how that the smiles they gave her as they hugged her didn’t reach their eyes. Of course, they were proud, but… this wasn’t what they wanted for their only daughter. Her little brother was there, also, wearing black slack and a blue shirt. He had taken after his mother, with the same dark brown hair and blue eyes. The Firebender was the only one in her family that had taken after her father. Her two older brothers also looked like their mother. Speaking of which, her mother complimented how nice she looked. The dark-haired young woman had worn a red dress, with a black sash. She was wearing black shoes. She had chosen brown eye shadow, and simple light pink lipstick. Her hair she had put up into a nice up do. She knew she looked nice. She hugged her little brother, who mentioned how cool he thought she was. A smile crossed her face. “Maybe you can be a Probender one day.” Her parent’s faces were very even. She took a seat near them as she waited for everyone else to arrive.

The area was a good sized. It was evident to Ren’ai that everyone who was coming would have plenty of room. A waitress appeared and asked if she wanted something to drink. She nodded, saying water for now. She was back in a couple of minutes with a glass of water. Her father told her that as soon as everyone was here, they would bring out the food. The dark-haired young woman looked around, wondering where everyone else was. They would be here soon, she was sure. Her brother started talking to her about the match. He’d been there with their parents. He was an all right kid. She hadn’t told her parents that her new boyfriend was going to be here. They’d met two weeks ago. Liu hadn’t met any of her friends or her family yet, but of course, he was coming because it was her and her team and winning the Probending match. He was now talking about how much he wanted to be a Probender wen he was older, like his big sister. She just smiled at him as she drank her water. "Of course, if you work hard, why not?" Maybe one day, she'd be watching him instead of the other way around.

"--and it's all my fault that we're late, and my arthritic legs won't listen to a word I say, no matter how many times I tell that if I douse them in yak milk culture and strawberries it's for their own good and not because I'm going to be serving them up for dessert to those nomadic barbarians in the Si Wong desert, and by the way isn't that just the funniest thing you ever heard? Dessert in the desert?"

"Yes, Grandma," Tadashi said, rolling his eyes, escorting his dear Grandma Sora gently holding his elbow into the restaurant. "Two for the Dragon Hawks party," he intoned to the hostess, "and my grandmother will need two glasses of water as soon as possible, please, I'm sorry." The hostess indicated the table where, as he looked, he saw Ren'ai and her family already seated, and then called over a waiter presumably for the purpose of getting the water. He murmured a "Thank you" and pointed to the table across Sora's field of vision. Sora's episode of senility cleared up almost immediately, judging by the way she focused her eyes and smiled.

"Very good, Tadashi. Thank you. You put up with so much from me," she chuckled, referring to her frequent bouts of eccentricity. She looked her oldest grandson over and gave an approving nod. As much as he loved wearing his Air Acolyte articles, tonight she had convinced him to wear his formal black dress shirt and pants, both with white hems (though he reserved the right to still wear his white puca shell necklace), while she herself dressed in a floor-length white peau de soie dress with a black chiffon scarf and sash, and a pair of earrings Tadashi had gotten for her which were each a small glass triple spiral triskele, the old airbending symbol. Sora had decided a simple monochrome would be best for both of them, since the people present were part of a complete and varied bending team and they didn't need to dress in favourite colours, even the Air Acolytes' colours.

"I pass muster?" Tadashi whispered as they approached the table, and Sora realised that she hadn't been as discreet as she thought. Squeezing his arm, she whispered back, "I suppose you'll do," and then they both muffled their laughter as they reached the table. Tadashi levered his arm loose and bowed first to Tasukete, then to Kyouko. Though he'd heard much about them from Ren'ai and Yuri, he'd only met them once when he'd had to drop off flyers for Ren'ai's approval, and he understood the descriptions his firebending friend had given. "Stiff" was a good word for her father, "prim" for her mother. But they were polite and tried, in their own way, to make Tadashi feel comfortable. He hadn't. Ren'ai's siblings, on the other hand, were a lot more enjoyable. He only saw Sukoshi tonight, though. He supposed the older two had plans of their own.

"Kyouko, Tasukete, it's so wonderful to see you again," Sora said smoothly, declining her head as she wasn't quite capable of a curtsey, and had left her walking sticks at home in exchange for Tadashi's strong arm. Unlike her grandson, she was a bit more acquainted with Ren'ai's parents, albeit almost entirely because of business. But then, Sora tried to do business with everyone in Republic City. "It's so generous of you to have this celebration for Ren'ai's team, and to invite us here as well. Aren't they just doing phenomenally? Hello Ren'ai, hello Sukoshi." She patted Tadashi's hand on the back of the chair he was holding out for her, and then carefully sank into the seat. Almost immediately two arms from beyond her peripheral vision set down two glasses of water. She vaguely recalled Tadashi requesting that earlier. "Thank you," she said without turning her head, lifting the first glass and taking a sip. Next to her, Tadashi settled into his own seat and grinned — somewhat more reservedly than normal — across the table at Ren'ai.

Ren’ai smiled as she saw Tadashi and his grandmother, Sora, being led into the area by the hostess. Of course, they both greeted her parents before herself. She waved at Sora. She’d only met her once, but she seemed like an all right lady. She was older, even older than her parents. Of course, she was Tadashi’s grandmother, so that made sense. Both of her father’s parents were dead. His mother had died several years ago. His father had followed a few years later. Both of her mother’s parents were alive, though. In fact, they were both only eight years older than her dad. That had been a bit odd, or so she was told. Of course, who would have a problem with their only daughter marrying the son of a rich businessman from the Fire Nation. Her mother had it made, and now she was, for all intents and purposes, a trophy wife, and a housewife.

After that, she’d never had to work another day in her life. Her father didn’t either, beyond managing the money of his estate. Her mother’s biggest job had been raising her four children, something she was still doing with her younger brother, Sukoshi. He still had a few more years ahead of him. After all, he was only eleven. That’s what her parents wanted for her – her mother’s life. They wanted her to marry, settle down and raise a family. They’d probably prefer that she marry a rich guy, because that would mean they wouldn’t have to worry about splitting her father’s wealth between their four children. He had enough that they’d be well off enough, sure. They still wouldn’t have to worry about working. Now wasn’t the time to think of such thoughts, though.

Both of her parents gave very polite greetings to Tadashi and his grandmother. Her father made a remark of how he was glad to have the party for them. Her mother just smiled and said hello. Ren’ai gave a respectful nod to Sora. “It’s wonderful to see you again, Mrs. Kimura.” No one was here yet, so they were still rather early. Yuri wasn’t here yet, and neither was Kamil and they were two of the other guests of honor, so to speak. Both of her brothers and their wives were supposed to be here, too. She didn’t blame them for not being on time, though. After all, Ryouko and Amai had a two year old boy named Mubai. Jin’s wife, Kogane, was about five or six months pregnant. The dark-haired young woman almost thought that she heard Yuri saw that her parents, along with her younger brother, Kira, were invited as well. She didn’t know if Kamil had invited anyone or not.

Speaking of which, at the moment, one of her older brother’s decided to show. Ryouko was twenty-five years old. He was tall, like both of his parents. He had his mother’s looks, being a Waterbender like she was. He stood a few inches taller than her, and was nearly eye level with their father. He wore a nice blue pant and a blue shirt. The woman by his side was shorter than she was. She had black hair and blue eyes, and wore a light blue dress. She was not overly pretty, but was just slightly above average in looks department. The boy in between them was two years old, and was also dressed nicely. They both smiled at her. Amai hugged her, and told her how proud she was. Her big brother took her in his arms, giving her a tight hug and told her how proud he was of his little sister. Ren’ai then went and hugged her nephew, Mubai, and he gave her a small hug before being called to his grandparent’s. Ren’ai then went and sat down back at her table. Her brother greeted Tadashi and Sora, introducing his wife and son.

Semi-Fancy Restaurant

Yuri was running a little late because her mother had taken a little too much time on her face. Her father had thought that it would have been nice for all four of them to arrive together as a family. The ride to the restaurant seemed to take forever, because her mother would not stop fussing over the way that she looked. And of course her little brother was just excited that his big sister was so cool, his friends were envious that his sister had moved out of the house so he did not have to run into her all the time. After what felt like a week they arrived at the place for the party, of course it just felt like it was going to be nothing but torture for the young Earthbender.

The green eyed girl walked in before her parents and her brother. Of course Emiko was still fussing with her short black hair that she had curled to give it more body, and the young woman wanted to bat her mother’s hands away. A part of her was just nervous about meeting Ren’ai’s new boyfriend, and about what her mother would say and add more pressure about finding a boyfriend of her own. She smiled when she saw Tadashi and thought that he looked nice and noticed the old woman with him. It must have been his grandmother. She was wearing a pale green dress that was rather form fitting with a box neck, with little yellow flower pattern on the bottom hem. She had went with black flats because she is too tall, bronze eye shadow with a little bit of blush and a light red lipstick and she was ready to go.

“Hello there, Manager.” Yuri told him as she smiled down at him; she gave the older woman a little smile because she did not want to seem rude for ignoring her. A waiter stopped by and asked if she would like something to drink with how her mother was getting on her nerve’s she decided to have a little bit of sake in her before she had to deal with her mother again. “So have both of you been here long?”

The woman came back with her drink and she thanked her before taking a little sip. Wow she had poured her some of the good stuff, not that she was much of a drinker but something about her mother just made her want to have something strong in her system. And as long as she stopped before reaching her limit then she would be fine. She just hoped that people would not think that she looked like a clown with her whole face made up and the dress when it was more common place to see her in pants. Of course she was just feeling a little conscious, besides she would be fine if no one made any comment on the way that she looked.

Her parents had gone over to talk to Ren’ai’s parents. Of course her mother and father did not want to be rude or anything. Her mother had gone with a bright yellow dress that showed off her slender build nicely despite having two children, while her husband Daichi went with black pants and a nice dark green shirt that went nicely with his eyes. Kira her little brother was wearing a light green shirt with black pants, because he wanted to be a little copycat to his sister.

If Kamil had known that it would have taken so long to get ready to go to the restaurant then he would have started preparing for it sooner. Given he wasn't that late, but still later than he originally wanted to be. It was mostly Saya's fault, though. Convincing her to come along with him was easier than getting her to dress up for the occasion.

The biggest reason he had dragged her along was because he hadn't really felt like going alone. Initially he had thought about just telling his grandmother and father that he had joined a Probending team against their wishes to get that over and done with, but he couldn't bring himself to do so. He didn't want them to find out from another source, but he couldn't just tell them either. So dragging Saya along with him it was.

It probably didn't help much that, while he thought he knew where the restaurant was he in fact did not. After denying that they were lost for a while he eventually gave in and asked for directions. Now there, he just needed to ask where their table was, which wasn't that hard to find. Were they the last ones here? Once at the table, he smiled and greeted everyone, ending with a "Hope we didn't keep everyone waiting," before taking a seat. Looking at everyone sitting at the table though he was happy he took the time to dress himself and his friend up a little. He had decided to go with a formal light blue dress shirt, black slacks and dark blue shoes. Instead of leaving his hair in its usual high ponytail, he had decided to braid it.

As for Saya, it had been one big hassle to get her to wear the dress he had helped his grandmother make for her - a sleeveless soft yellow dress that blended nicely with her dark green scarf he knew she wouldn't stop wearing. She was wearing dark green flats. Her hair, which he had wrestled with a bit, was up in a high ponytail and the only make-up she had on was a light blush. The entire way here she didn't look very pleased, but her face cleared up when they reached the table where everyone else was at, greeting everyone politely.

Saya was just here for Kamil, though. She recognized Ren'ai and Yuri from his team, but everyone else was unfamiliar and it was a little intimidating for her. It didn't help much that the way she was dressed was making her feel uncomfortable and a little self-conscious. What was she supposed to do? Both Kamil and her chose their drink - water for her, nothing yet for him - and she thanked the woman when she got her drink. She ended up playing a bit with the glass for a bit rather than drinking, though. She was starting to regret agreeing to come here.

Sora set down her water and beamed back at Ren'ai. She was such a sweet young woman, very deferential to her elders and very polite. "And it's wonderful to see you too, Ren'ai. Tadashi doesn't stop talking about your teammates, you know--"

"Oh, here we go," Tadashi said in a pig's whisper, but just then another of Ren'ai's brothers came in with his family, and Ren'ai got up to greet them. Sora psshed at Tadashi with a smile and picked up her water again, leaning back in the chair and relaxing. Tadashi turned around in his chair and then stood up to greet Ryouko, who obviously knew who Tadashi was and introduced him to his family. He and his wife Amai were both dressed in blue — Tadashi remembered that all of Ren'ai's brothers were waterbenders — and they looked lovely together. He was a little jealous but his excitement at meeting them overruled any negativity, and he solemnly greeted little Mubai and shook his hand. The two-year-old seemed amused. As he stood back up to adult level, Yuri and her family came in, and Yuri came almost directly toward him. She was done up more than normal, but the effect was overall very pleasing; Tadashi hoped she didn't mind getting so dolled up, since she usually dressed drastically more casual. "No heels?" he teased her in response to her greeting. He was also pleased to see that she nodded to his grandmother before grabbing something to drink. Ren'ai was the only one who'd had the pleasure of meeting Grandma Sora before tonight.

Yuri was back in mere seconds, and Tadashi found that that Ren'ai was with them as well. "I only got here about five minutes ago," he answered Yuri, "Ren'ai's family beat us here. I thought we were going to be late, but... I don't see any sign of Kamil--" With the expert timing of a well-planned story, Kamil walked into the restaurant at that exact moment. "Nevermind, he's here," Tadashi gestured with his glass of water. "Who's that with him, his girlfriend?" Kamil came up to them and said hello before either of the girls could answer, and Tadashi clapped him on the back in welcome before stepping back and letting Kamil help the girl into her seat. Tadashi grinned at Ren'ai and Yuri, and took his own seat again as well — on the other side of Kamil's lady friend. Grandma Sora was deep in discussion with Yuri's parents; from the way Sora was chatting easily, Tadashi would assume she had met Yuri's parents previously (she did have a tendency to meet everyone previously), but then again Sora talked to everyone as if they'd known each other for years. Meanwhile, he turned his own attention to the girl next to him; she seemed rather uncomfortable. "Hi, I'm Tadashi," he said, offering a hand. "I'm the Dragon Hawks manager."

"I have to say, it's so adorable how Kira follows Yuri around, Emiko," Sora observed to Yuri's mother. "I only had the one daughter, of course, Tadashi's mother, and Piri was always an independent spirit but she stayed close to home, that one did. Now Piri had twins and thank goodness they didn't take after their father, no offense Daichi, their father was a bum, but they're independent of each other. Nothing like Kira and Yuri. I mean, they get along and they clearly love each other, and they stick up for each other no matter what, but for being twins you never saw two such different children." She chuckled as she watched Tadashi mingle with his teammates, their siblings and friends, a natural born diplomat and peacemaker. Like Sora's father. "I swear Tadashi is the reincarnation of my own father. By the same name, ironically. Katashi's a wild one, though. He changes his moods and his tastes like the wind changes direction. But he's a good boy at heart. They'll find their places in the world and still have each other. Like your two." She sighed again and scanned across the table at what a large gathering they had become. This is what harmony is. This is what Republic City was designed for. Sora couldn't help but smily broadly at the thought.

Hitomi Bread and Goods

Airi giggled when Niko called her 'Boss'. It wasn't something she was used to hearing around in the kitchen as it wasn't boss, it was 'Mom' or 'Dad'. She was the boss! But even if she was the boss, the floury mess still had a hold over her to dictate when she did something and how she did it. With bread, you couldn't do a job halfway, or at least not in this household! If you let bread raise too long, weird things could start when it went into the oven. Still, they could make flat bread if they were in a rush, skipping the raising process completely, but there wasn't a whole lot of market for that. It was often something they sold the next day of leftover bread dough when no one wanted to wait for it to rise and cook before going off to bed.

Another giggle escaped her lips when he pointed out when she woke up. "Actually, I slept in," she told him, putting a little extra force into kneading the dough and accidentally putting an emphasis on the word 'in'. "We usually wake up a few hours before we open so we have something to sell. Bread has to be made fresh everyday, so it's not like we can make it the night before. It'd get cold and crusty!" she exclaimed like it was a crime to let something like that happen to the simple food. In all fairness, it wasn't just a simple food but the thing that brought money in for her and her family's wellbeing.

With all this Amon talk, Airi had been taking up the later shifts of work, either manning the front of the store and selling their goods, or in the back making the flat bread she was thinking about earlier just so she could stay up longer and protect her family. Sure, she wasn't the strongest firebender, but she knew how to use her bending properly and effectively. With the exception of the Equalists she met, it was no secret that their family was of benders, minus her brother. Her parents, though they denied it, were old and senile while she was young and strong. Even if it weren't for her parents, she would protect her younger brother. Well, then again... if any Equalists came, they would come for her if her parents were out of the picture. She was the bender while Aisen wasn't.

She eyed Niko's work. It wasn't much, yet, but a clean kitchen was worth it's weight in gold. Actually, if it wasn't clean, they could get shut down or make a bad reputation with the people. "Don't forget the corners," she teased, sticking her tongue out. "Oh! And your mother?" Airi asked. She didn't get a lot about his parents other than his father walked out on them or something and that his mom overworked. It would be a pity if she worked herself to a breaking point.

Ren’ai looked around as she heard someone else enter. There was Yuri, her best friend, with her mother, father, and little brother, Kira in tow. The Earthbender seemed every annoyed with her mother, and by the way the older woman was acting, she didn’t blame her. At least her mother didn’t fuss over the way she looked. Kyouko trusted her daughter to know what to wear on certain occasions. Emiko obviously didn’t trust her daughter all that much, either that, or she was so obsessed with how her daughter looked when she did dress up, because she didn’t usually do that. Either way, it was silly. Yuri knew how to dress, she just usually choose to dress casually most of the time. Ren’ai, on the other hand, enjoyed makeup and clothes, so unless she was training or in a probending match, on went the makeup and the nice clothes, not necessarily a dress mind, you.

“Not long,” she said, but Tadashi quickly explained that her family had beaten them here, and that Kamil hadn’t shown up yet – only to have the Waterbender show up right that moment. Talk about timing, right? The Firebender smiled at him, and gave him a polite wave. The girl he was with was pretty, but Ren’ai didn’t know who she was to him. It didn’t matter to her. He’d brought a date that was fine. If he brought a “friend date” what was his prerogative. He sat down at the same table with her, Tadashi, and Sora. There was seating for about twenty, in two tables of ten. They were placed near enough to each other that you could turn around and talk to someone without having scream or anything. It was a nice restaurant, and there was some nice music playing in the background. They came around then with some appetizers and set them on the table for them while they talked.

There were two empty seats at her table still, as Yuri hadn’t sat down. Her little brother, Sukoshi, had come over to their table, leaving her parents over at the other table with Ryouko and his family. Speaking of family, her other brother choose that moment to walk in, first coming over to his little sister and congratulating her. They apologized for being late, and Kogane – his wife – blamed it on herself, telling everyone that it was all her fault as they introduced themselves to everyone. She and Jin walked over her husband’s parents and sat down at that table. Everyone was here now, except for one person. Her eyes flicked to the door again. She had invited him, and warned him that her entire family would be there, barring her living grandparents It would have been rude not to. She didn’t think that it was like him to back out of something like this. The Firebender pushed those thoughts out her mind. Liu had said he would be there. Why wouldn’t he come to a party for his girlfriend?

Ren’ai looked at Yuri and smiled, motioning for her to sit down. The dark-haired young woman knew that this was not the usual kind of scene for her best friend, but it would be much easier if the taller young woman would just sit down and try to enjoy herself. She grabbed one of the appetizers and ate it, before taking a drink of her water. There wasn’t too much talking going on right now, but the young woman figured that everything would lighten up as time went on. Half the people here were her family after all and they certainly didn’t have a problem in voicing their opinion. The dark-haired young woman knew that she should be extra nice to her father, as should everyone – he was paying for this, after all. He was also supporting the team, so it was least they could do to be thankful for what he was doing. It was making it a lot easier on her and the team in general, after all, not having to worry about tournament costs. That was one good thing about having a rich father.

Hitomi Bread and Goods

(I spelled it right this time!)

Niko found that using warmer water made his work much easier and twice as fast. As he scrubbed a particularly stubborn section he listened closely to Airi's musings on waking up early and the woes of crusty bread. Of course, he knew very little about the process at hand. Bread baking was something of a specialized skill that probably came as a second nature to someone like Airi. Growing up in a bakery she would know all the in's and out's of it, how long to knead it and how long to let it sit. It was inspiring to listen to her talk about it like that, this what what had fed her and put clothes on her back. Niko was really starting to admire her when he looked over to see her sticking her tongue out. "Ah, the corners!" he replied in his sweetest voice, "I wouldn't dream of it!"

Niko wasn't sure if she was just making conversation, or if she really cared about his mother, but he assumed it was the latter. After all, someone who spends their day off looking for people to help has got to be caring, right? "She's doing just fine," he replied cheerfully, "though to tell you the truth, I think she's a little jealous of me. You know, now that I'm the breadwinner of the family." He couldn't help it and paused to laugh at his own terrible wit. "All joking aside, she feels a little guilty that I have to work, but look at us!" he said sweeping his arms out. "We're having a great time! And besides, where in the world is a better place to work than a bakery when you knead dough?" He collapsed into fits of laughter again and turned to wash out his rag in the sink. He made quick work of the remaining mess on the counter and gave it a final wipe down (yes, even the corners!). It pained him to know that they would soon be all gunked up again, but it was all in the name of bread.

Liu Zhon was late. He detested being late.

His footsteps were lost amidst the blaring of horns and hurried movements of passers by, a crowd of people intent on finding their way to their desired destination and anyone who was in their way be damned. Teenagers with probending shirts and memorabilia chatting animately about the latest match and matters relevant to those of the younger years. It was amusing in a way, watching adolescents so happily involved in their own world, blissfully unaware of the hard work that awaited them - well, most of them - when they grew up; as well as the cruel awakening reality had in store.

Macabre thoughts of bloodied bodies flashed into Liu ZHon's mind, but he dismissed them, refusing to consider the disturbing reaction some of the less law-inclined citizens had shown regarding some of their enemies. That was a world that, if the Avatar truly was anything like what Aang had been, the young of Republic City would never have to experience. The night's chill could not touch the firebender, but he still shivered faintly. Despite his bravery, the worry remained, and his core was frozen moreso for it.

Yet, not all that night was grim despair. Indeed, it was a special occasion! A celebration for Ren'ai and her team and - more importantly - his first meeting with her parents. Liu Zhon wasn't nervous, exactly, but there was a remnant twinge of nerves at the prospect of meeting her folks. After all, it was never an easy thing, saying hello to your girlfriend's parents for the first time in full sight of her friends and siblings. Indeed, aside from passing greetings, he knew next to none of her friends - their whirlwind romance had consisted of a few days of time spent together and three very lovely dates, but little more.

The restaurant he had been asked to loomed before him several minutes later, well-lit and decorated in impressive amounts of finery. Doubtless, this would be a rather expensive meal - he was suddenly glad he wasn't paying. Pausing near the bright entrance, he looked down at himself. Garbed in a business-casual set of clothes, he rather approved of his appearance; a fire-red gold-buttoned coat over a white shirt, done up almost all the way, with the button just below his neck left untouched. His coat fell in good symmetry to his similarly-coloured pants, the sunray-coloured trim on the coat reflected in the hems of the pants, with gold dragons winding down the arms of his coat and the legs of his pants, black hawks inscribed around them in fine detail.

A pair of polished black formal shoes completed the outfit, with gloves absent from him tonight. His Sun-and-Moon pendant hung revealed around his neck, jet black hair faintly damp from his shower, falling in the mildly spiky, framing manner that Ren'ai liked. An exhale was given, and he lay his expressions at rest, allowing his cheekbones to define themselves and his natural good looks to do the rest. Confidently, he strode past the wandering couples and into the restaurant, enquiring after his girlfriend and her party, before being directed towards it. An aura of cool superiority surrounded him now, lending itself as if to a naturally elevated individual. 'Walk like a Dragon,'
his Father had instructed, 'and others shall respect you as one.'

Liu Zhon was a Dragon tonight, allowing a smile to grace his features as he looked to his anxious partner. "What?" He said in a voice conditioned for sanguine, soothing texture. "Did you really think I'd miss your celebration, Sunshine?" He used his nickname for her as a sign of confidence, care and affection layered into the term. Golden eyes shifted to scan the assembled, and he bowed respectfully to whom he presumed were her parents, greeting them as was proper. "It is an honour to meet you all, I am Liu Zhon, Ren'ai's very fortunate boyfriend."

Boldly stated. At least he had the self-esteem down pat.[/color]

A smile crossed Ren’ai’s face as she heard a now familiar voice speaking to her. She turned her head and saw Liu standing there – late, but here just as he said. She could feel all of her family’s eyes looking at him from the moment he walked in. None of them had even known she was dating someone, let alone that she had invited him here. It wasn’t that she was ashamed of him or anything – far from it – but she didn’t like discussing her private life with her family, and she hadn’t seen any of them except for briefly at her last match, and that had been shortly after her meeting with Liu. That was hardly a time to discuss such things. Besides, it was really none of their business who she dated, and her parents insisted having a say in every aspect of her life. This was one where she wouldn’t let them have a say.

Ren’ai almost thought she heard a snide remark from her mother that it was “about time”, but nothing could bring the dark-haired young woman down right now. She stood up, and walked over to him, hoping that he knew the remark was meant for her - not for him. “Not for a second,” she said, as she came to stand next to him, looking up at him. Despite her height, as she was on the tall side, he had nine inches on her. Well, tonight, with her heels, it was only about six, so she came to about his chin tonight, instead of his shoulders. The Firebender knew that she could have just invited him to sit down, but as he knew no one there other than her, she should introduce him. “So, this is everyone.” She would start with the table she had been sitting at, as the other table housed all of her family members in attendance tonight, except her little brother, who was sitting with her.

“The one standing up is Yuri, my best friend and our Earthbender,” Ren’ai said. He, of course, would know her name, as she had mentioned her. The Firebender hoped her Earthbending friend would sit down. She seemed uncomfortable, and she felt bad that her best friend felt that way right now. She turned her attention now to those sitting at the table that she had been seated at. “That’s Kamil, our Waterbender, and his… date, Saya. That’s Tadashi, our Team Manager. My little brother, Sukoshi.” He was polite, one family member down… “ Sora, Tadashi’s grandmother. Emiko and Daichi, Yuri’s parents, and Yuri’s younger brother, Kira.” The next table was the one that she was a little more worried about. It would make things so much easier if her parents would be nice tonight. Somehow, the dark-haired young woman felt that was too good to be true, but there was no reason that she couldn’t wish for tonight to be perfect.

Ren’ai switched to her family’s table, as it had turned out to be. “That’s my older brother, Jin, and his wife, Kogane. My oldest brother, Ryouko, his wife, Amai, and their son, Mubai.” Her nephew just stared at the big stranger, while her brothers appeared to be sizing him up. That was one thing that the Firebender detested about being the only girl – she was forever Ryouko and Jin’s “baby sister”, despite the fact that she was eighteen and full grown. They were polite, though, thankfully. “And then, my mother, Kyouko, and my father, Tasukete, our sponsor.” She also didn’t need to say that he was paying for tonight, because she had also mentioned that when she’d told Liu which restaurant the party would be at. Her parents seemed to approve, at least on first glance, as they had been polite. A waitress appeared, wanting to know if Liu wanted anything to drink. The appetizers were still on the table, so the dark-haired young woman motioned for the table, letting him know that it was okay to sit down as she started to make her way back to the table.

Of course, right then, she heard her little brother ask how they met. Oh, if anything would make her parents make this night go downhill, it would be the answer to that question. Ren’ai didn’t mind. In fact, she found it amusing that he had asked her out after beating her in a fight. Not everyone would agree. The dark-haired young woman just smiled at Sukoshi, allowing Liu to answer if he wanted to. She knew her parents would want to know the answer to that question, as well, but the Firebender didn’t feel that this was neither the time nor the place. Sukoshi may be young , but he was not stupid enough to bring the question up again if she had neglected to answer it once. He knew her temper just as well as anyone else did who knew her well enough. She turned back to Liu. “Go ahead and order a drink and sit down.”

A Semi-Fancy Restaurant

Yuri could not help but to giggle a little at Tadashi’s comment about the fact that she was not wearing any heels. And thought that it was nice that her parents did not mind talking to his grandmother in the least, and that she was happily talking to them like she knew them for years.

“Well it’s not like I need to be any taller, besides if I need to get away in a hurry I can easily run.” The green eyed girl told her bald friend as she leaned down and gave him a friendly kiss on the cheek. She had gotten Ren’ai’s hint and sat down next to her at the other table.

Kira was happy to snack on the appetizers that were on the table. It seemed that teenage boys were always eating. She decided to just follow her female friend’s lead and started to nibble on some of the appetizers as well. It was not like she was really hungry because her nerves were all bundled up, but the drink was making things tolerable.

When she had just started to relax there came in her roommate’s new boyfriend that she had never met before. Wow he seemed really full of himself and she wanted to just roll her eyes, but of course she fought the urge to do so. She smiled up at him, and when she heard what he called Ren’ai that was weird. Well because her friend did not mention anything about that, and this just seemed a little too weird to her. Just smile and make it through the night, was the only thought in her mind.

“Ren’ai, could you please order for me? I will be back in a minute.” Yuri told her friend as she finished her drink and got up. With a smile on her face she slowly made her way to the lady’s room, without seeming like she was running out or anything. It felt like a huge weight had been momently lifted from her shoulders. She just needed to use up some time and decided to go ahead and touch up her lipstick. Just looking in the mirror at herself made her realize that she did not even look like herself all dolled up. But it’s not like the shade that she had decided to wear looked bad, enough time wasted on her face.

She went ahead and washed her hands making sure that her hands were as spotless as she walked in. Going back to the table and still not sure what to say to Liu, if anything but if all else failed she would just sit there and hope that nothing bad was going to happen to her.

Hitomi Bread and Goods
tags: niko

Airi had a feeling she was going to be the victim of these bread puns for quite a while, though it did open her mind to all the different types of jokes she could make to lighten the mood. Well, lightening the mood would be mostly for her sake. Though she was very carefree, recent events gave her reason to fret. Talking made things a lot easier; joking worked even better. "I think she should be happy you're not just loafing around," she added with a happy giggle, her mind already thinking of different puns she could use in the future. Maybe her parents would enjoy hearing a few of them!

At his last joke, Airi burst out in laughter. It didn't take long before her stomach began to hurt from laughing too much. Usually, she would hold her stomach with her hands, but seeing as her hands were covered with bread dough, her elbow was a suitable replacement, merely pushing on her stomach. That was very clever! She imagined herself tipping her hat to 'Sir Niko' and talking in a funny accent. "You're really bad at putting jokes aside," she couldn't help but notice, almost forgetting why she had asked the initial question. "I'm glad that you're having fun. I never got paid to work seeing as it is a family business. Man, what I wouldn't have done for a couple extra yuans at your age," she reminisced with a certain air to her voice.

She wiped off sweat from her forehead with her sleeve, only now taking into account the heat from the oven. Gosh! She was so used to the heat, but was he? Well, he said he was from the Earth Kingdom, right? She didn't know if it got hot there... Oh, but even if he couldn't handle it, there was nothing she could do. It wasn't like she could just take the oven somewhere else, could she? As Niko continued to wash the counters, she headed to the sink he just left to wash her hands. Afterwards, she grabbed her oven mitts and opened the large door, seeing several loaves still baking. Airi quickly closed the door so it wouldn't loose anymore heat. "Enjoying it here in Republic City?" she asked.

Semi-Fancy Restarant, hereafter known as Illustrioso
(cleared with Karena first)

Tadashi wasn't really concerned when Kamil's rather shy guest made no immediate move to reply to him. He was having rather a fun time, despite being under the occasional scrutinising gaze of Ren'ai's parents. The party was made even merrier by the arrival of Ren'ai's other brother and his wife. Grandma was alternating between catnaps and spirited conversation with Yuri's parents, which made sense since they were not as strict or stand-offish as Ren'ai's, and therefore more likely to excuse her fits of senility and slumber.

Then the world ended.

Into the reserved room set off from the rest of the restaurant walked a polished, chiseled, handsome man who promptly bowed to the general company and introduced himself as Ren'ai's boyfriend. Everything about him from hair to skin to eyes to clothing fell perfectly into place, all matching in a subtle dazzle of red, gold and black. He was mature, cultured, and sure of himself. Tadashi instantly felt himself fall below the bar. Not that he had been romantically interested in Ren'ai, but he and Ren'ai were fairly close friends, he thought; in a twisted and unfair way, he felt somewhat betrayed, even though she had mentioned that she was kind of seeing some guy. But, WOW... what a guy... everything about him made everything about Tadashi seem flawed in comparison.

All of this passed through Tadashi's mind over the course of a few seconds while he took a drink of water to mask any sign of surprise or discomfort. As he set his glass down, his Air Acolyte training kicked in and he understood immediately that if this guy was important to Ren'ai, he needed to be fair and calm and courteous and give Liu Zhon a chance. As Ren'ai went around the tables introducing the other guests to him, when she reached him, he gave Liu a polite nod and a smile that could be primarily construed as friendly. His grandma gave a warmer smile when Ren'ai got around to her, and then when Ren'ai and Liu turned to a different table Sora instantly looked at Tadashi. Somehow, as always, she seemed to know that his insides were twisting. Yuri excused herself to the restroom and Tadashi suspected she might feel the same way. Had she known Ren'ai was inviting Liu, or was it a surprise to her too?

Tadashi ignored his grandmother's gaze, took another long drink of water, and then stared fixedly at his plate, mentally reciting one of the Air Acolyte mantras he had learned this week several times in a row.

Yuri had decided to try her hardest to relax a bit, and that included to the happy couple that was sitting next to her. Sure she had not really had a conversation with Kamil before, just a little comment here and there while they were at practice. It was not like she was anti-social or anything and besides it is a little immature to blame stuff on your parents, or more particularly on your mother. It took her a few moments to fight with herself before she decided to go ahead and talk to him, because he did have a date with him. Then again there was no harm in just talking to him, and she decided to go ahead and say the first thing that came to her mind.

“Kamil, you and your friend look nice.” The green eyed girl told him in a soft voice, she was sure if she had raised her voice that it would have sounded funny because she was so nervous. She had turned towards him so that she could glance at him, but not like stare because that would have made her feel even more tongue-tied then she already was.

Kira could not help but to hear his sister’s voice and what she said just made him snort. Sure he thought that it was funny that his sis was just so nervous when it came to talking to guys. He thought that Yuri was smart, talented, and nice. And that she had no reason not to take so little pride in herself, if only some of Ren’ai’s confidence had rubbed off of her onto his sis that would be great. But then again you could only ask for so many miracles to happen. And for his sis and her best friend with their new Waterbender to win their first match and he was so proud of them. Suddenly he felt a flat hand hit the back of his head hard.

Yuri had heard her brother, and she did not want to him add any words to that. Because she was afraid of what he would say if she did not suddenly smack him hard on the back of his head. Sure it was not very ladylike in the least but it would at least help her to keep her cool. A slightly nervous giggle came out of her before she could help herself.

“Little brothers got to love them. So do you have any siblings?” She asked as she tried her best not to act as shy as she felt. A small friendly smile touched her lips as she raised her eyes to look at him. She just hoped that she would not have to deal with any more interruptions from Kira. And of course it helped her keep her mind of her best friend’s boyfriend that she had never met in her whole life. And she was not even sure what she could tell the guy, because she did not do well with guys that she did not know. And it would be a big help if she could just have a normal conversation with this Waterbender that she thought was cute. Well not like she would have dared ask him out, this was just all about getting along and working as a team. And it would be good just to be able to get to a point when she is comfortable talking to him and just be herself.

Food Stalls
Tag: Lykka

Rong walked through downtown at a slow, casual pace. His simple white under shirt was damp from the sweat of his workout and covered with the dust that accompanied the earth bending he weaved in between sets during his workout. He'd just finished training and was experiencing all the symptoms that followed. His hands were still a little sore, as usual his calluses were ripped up from the weight and roughness of the day's serving of iron. His focus for the day had been his back muscles and they were tight with the pump from his workout. But the most glaring side effect of the training, was the inevitable hunger that set in afterward. The bearded young man didn't typically care to sit down and eat at a proper restaurant after a training session, he'd found that most of the owners of such places weren't typically too fond of entertaining such dusty company. Fortunately for him there were all sorts of food stalls on his way. Though he was hungry, he was in no rush to make a choice. It was his day off from the factory and he was enjoying the sunshine.

Though the muscle bound earth bender missed certain aspects of life in the countryside one thing that he loved about the city was the abundance of different cuisines. He'd particularly grown to love water tribe food and was eyeing a food stall that seemed to glimmer with fresh fish and roasted seal meat when his concentration was instantaneously broken by the unmistakable odor of komodo chicken. The words echoed in his mind causing a miniature wave of almost child like excitement to pass through him. His father never let him have komodo chicken meat growing up, "your grandfather didn't fight the damn war his entire youth for you to eat fire nation food," he'd always say. He'd always found his father to be an overly strict man, it was a war of people, the komodo chickens hadn't hurt anyone, they were only guilty of being delicious.

His mind made up, Rong turned his boots toward the food stand where the smell originated. The owners of the fairly large stall were serving komodo chicken kabobs on the skewer with tomato and ash banana slices. A variety of other foods as well, including dumplings, komodo rhino sausages, noodle soup and others. This young man however only had eyes for those kabobs. It looked like the food was popular too as the food stall had amassed a small line. The earth bender took his place in the line and waited patiently. As he did he untied a waterskin from his waist and began to drink from it.

While Saya had in fact agreed to tag along with Kamil, she had not really expected anyone to talk to her. Or at least, not this soon. It would be silly and far too pessimistic for her taste to think that no one would talk to her while clearly being there. Still, she ended up freezing slightly when spoken to and couldn't react to Tadashi's question immediately. "Oh, um, I'm Saya," she replied, taking his hand in hers and giving it a less-than-firm shake. "S-so you're the Dragon Hawks' manager, h-huh? Pleasure meeting you." Was she stuttering? Why was she stuttering? No this wasn't like her at all she didn't like this. The amount of how uncomfortable she was feeling was slowly starting to work on her nerves, but she couldn't really do much about it. What did she do, throw a tantrum? She was more than a little sure that wouldn't end well for anyone.

Kamil on the other hand didn't really say much after his greeting. Now that he was seated, he decided to take the time to look at everyone that was there, of course practically knowing no one. It didn't stop him from trying to guess who was who and their relations. He did stall enough with his people watching to listen to his struggle a bit (timid Saya that was a new one for him) and the most he offered her in return when she glanced in his direction was a cheesy grin. Said grin earning him a punch to his arm under the table. He winced, but kept on smiling.

Somewhere mid-guess someone else arrived. He was definitely easy on the eyes, but clearly very taken by the look of things. By Ren'ai. Or at least, that was a bit of the impression he got with the way he spoke to her. As Ren'ai quickly told him who was who -Kamil smiling and waving a little when she got to him - he also took this time to learn who everyone was exactly himself. He had to fight back a bit of a snicker when Saya gave Ren'ai a scandalized look at the word 'date'. "You are technically my 'date', aren't you? In a platonic way?" he whispered to her. She just gave him a bit of a look before going back to staring at her lap.

Somewhere along the line the Waterbender couldn't help but feel as if something in the air...changed. Roughly around the point where Yuri got up and left for a bit. Kamil didn't know why the air would change in the first place so he just wrote that down as being his imagination. He'd been mid-chew of one of the appetizers - wait when did he start eating - when Yuri started talking to him. He swallowed the food before smiling slightly at her. "Thanks for the compliment. If we look nice it means I must be doing something right." He replied. Was it just him though, or did she seem a tad nervous? True not many words had been shared between the two of them, but... Actually, the few comments made during training could hardly be considered as much. Though during practice he was usually more focused on, well, the practice and getting better. Outside of that there was work and-

No, he was a bad teammate. There was no valid enough excuse as to why he hadn't tried to talk to anyone of the Dragon Hawks more. He could try to fix that problem a bit now though, couldn't he?

Though he hadn't expected it, Kamil couldn't help but be slightly amused at Yuri's reaction to whatever it was her brother had said. And then commented about her brother while asking if he had any siblings of his own. "Siblings?" He repeated, tilting his head a bit to the side. "Not as far as I can tell, no. I might have a brother or sister, but ah..." He paused, trying to think of what to say next. He then just shrugged. "...there isn't much to add to that really." He'd never really stopped to think about if he had siblings or not. Or at least, the chance that he could have one. He had sometimes imagined what it would have been like if he had a brother or a sister when he was younger, but other than that nothing. If he did have a sibling no one bothered to tell him, and even if he asked he was sure that no one would bother to give him a straight answer. "By the look of things though you and your brother seem to get along swimmingly. Lots of love for everyone." He replied with a smile and a bit of a tease.
