Kym - First of, I would like to say that your writing is good, and you obviously know how to roleplay. With that being said, after talking with Shio, he and I don't think you followed the prompt correctly. The whole point of the dream sequence was for you to illustrate in your post that your character was dreaming. Without the prompt, I would never have known that your character was dreaming. For all I know, he could have been sent to the Avatar's world somehow. You were very confusing on that point, regardless of whether he liked it or not. Also, in your post, your character somewhat knew what was going on, and that was not with Toph asked for. The prompt stated that you knew THIS world. Also, the rules in this thread stated that you are not use NPC's, that we want to see how you interact without any other characters around. The NPC's were not major, but you should have either written them indirectly or left them out completely. With all that being said, your exemption is DENIED. Please go through either the Battle or Romance Training.

Shen Yu's Prompt -The world is in danger, and you have just been told that you are the only person who can stop it. What do you do? Do you want this responsibility? How do you feel? Please go in depth, and use only your character and no others. Dig deep and do not just scratch the surface.
OOC: This has turned out rather long, but it was entertaining to have Shen be forced into the role of savior. I'd like to go someplace with it someday...
Shen fixed his gaze at a point low on the tree and keeled down, folding his legs underneath him while keeping his torso and head straight. The position was familiar and comforting, allowing him to focus on his breathing and calm himself down. All life came down to this, all thoughts, the breaths and the ticking over of the mind.
Breathe in. And out. And in. And out.
Shen prided himself on his simplicity of emotion: he saw it as a form of honesty. But this was frustrating- his feelings mixed together so thoroughly that they were almost indistinguishable from each other. Anger, confusion, fear, anger again and an odd sensation of powerlessness.
In. And out. And in.
How did he know the information was accurate, though? It would be an illogical kind of universe that set the responsibility for the world on his shoulders alone. He didn't even like this place that much. The world would end in time, that was for certain- collapsed under the weight of ti's own stupidity and hate and irrationality and fear. You couldn't help all that- it was too big for someone to do. What really mattered were the small things, the little things that you could make a difference too. This war, this obscure upcoming apocalypse- they had too much momentum. To face them would be as to face a tidal wave and be crushed.
Out. And in. And out.
Shen snorted at himself. Excuses, all of them. He hated being forced on this journey to save this world, but he wouldn't pretend to himself that he'd be justified in leaving it to die. The problem with the upcoming destruction of an entire world is that it invariably includes the bit you are standing on. It wasn't like he had a choice it the matter, and Shen hated that- these... grand heroics weren't him. He'd never believed that interfering helped anything, that you could solve big problems all at once, and he was being forced into these views, acting as if they were true.
Shen swore to himself and stood up. His thoughts were just going around in circles and disrupting his meditation, as with the last two times. While banging his head against the proverbial wall did help his mood, it wasn't getting him anywhere.
The man reached to his left for his pipe and lit it with some nearby spark rocks, glad that one of his regular and few pleasures in life had not deserted him. That was what, above all, he hated about this crusade that had been forced upon him. It had invaded his life, disrupted his peaceful moments of meditation, of merely breathing and thinking and looking inside of himself and outside at the universe. Shen swore that someone was going to pay for stopping his spiritual journey and more than that, the time that enabled him to get as close to understanding the world as he ever did.
Almost as bad, it had also disrupted his bending. After the failure of his meditation earlier, Shen had gone through some regular patterns, the very basics that he had trained at for every day he could. The movements were ingrained into his mind, his body, so that the fire sprang from inside of him as naturally as the movement of his body. But that hadn't happened recently. Oh, he'd produced fire all right, but it was hotter, wilder than what he'd ever done before: it wasn't his fire, in his control, the sourness and irritation and spirituality and simpleness of his soul given form- it was angry and harsh. It wasn't his fire- it was the fire of the fake him, that had been forced into this role. His purest form of expression had been stolen from him and, worse, twisted into something else.
Looking at the smoke coming from his pipe, Shen knew he had to do something about it, and his only option was to do this quest. But it was the core of his philosophy that everyone should be themselves, as hard as they can. But since he couldn't do what he would do in this case, which was bugger off and give the role to someone more deserving of it, like the drunk who'd harassed him in Ba Sing Se or some appallingly idealistic kid, he'd just have to do it for the reasons he'd do it.
What possible motive could he have to save the world, apart from mere self-preservation? That was nothing special, nothing intrinsically him- anyone could have come up with that just out of will to survive. For his friends, family? But he believed that they could (and should) be able to solve their own problems. Why would he do this, when it disrupted not only his bending but his....
Ah.
He'd not do it for the world, not for the people in it, not for the ugliness or the beauty in it, not even for his friends and family, his pipe or his sake. He'd do it so he could regain his bending and his meditation, for some of the most selfish reasons imaginable. Shen didn't smile, but he did make the kind of smirk that people do when they have realized something that while not nice is nevertheless amusing.
"I'm rather a bastard, aren't I....?"
No one but several small creatures were around to hear this statement, which Shen considered unimportant: it didn't dilute the truth of the statement or the feeling of partially regaining his self. Shen cupped his hands together and blew out a small, controlled breath, making a small flame appear in the midst of his hands. It was a lot larger and fiercer than he'd intended it to be, but it didn't crackle and it didn't split and it didn't threaten to burn him.
Shen - Interesting post. There were some minor errors as far as grammar was concerned, but nothing major. The post was good, and I liked the insight you provided into his character. Anyway, good job! APPROVED
Ji-Lin Tsen - You are a Princess, and only child of your father, the King. One day, both of your parents are brutally murdered, leaving you, their only heir, the new Queen. However, as the law says, only a man may take the throne unwedded. If you don't marry within thirty days, your claim to the throne is forfeit, and the throne goes to your cousin, a cruel tyrant. What do you do? How do you feel? Remember, no godmoding, only what your character thinks and your character actions. Delve into your character, don't just scratch the surface.
Dignified. It was the only word the burned the fore of her mind as she stood, surrounded by the kingdom that she would soon lead. As their queen. The words echoed around her mind, the faint, blurry images of her mother and father replaying over in her mind like a broken video screen. Garbed in black, her face was illuminated by the fire the would forever clasp her parents in it's burning grasp. Her face was cold, almost bordering emotionless, yet luckily for her her face was masked, almost unseeable, by a thin layer of expensive silk, the threads so fine that it lifted in the gentle caress of wind that breezed through the courtyard. The whole clearing was silent, save for the faint crackling the fire made as it devored the wood used to light it up. The soon to be queen watched the flickers dance to the sky, slowly dying in both light and beauty as they ascended. Perhaps one of them could be her parents? Childish yes, but she couldn't help but indulge herself in childish fantasies now that she had taken such a responsibility on her shoulders.
It was one of both joy and depression. Who wouldn't want to call themselves a proud leader of a nation, with soldiers behind their backs and loyal citizens ready to bend to her every whim? Well, that sounded harsh, but there was no other way to describe it. As a Princess, Lin had been doted on. She had no brothers, no sisters, and an only child was what her parents had wanted. Being young, she could never quite shake off the feeling that her father was disappointed that she had been born to the feminine side. Growing up to become a fine young woman, intelligent and well defined in both mind and body, she realized that she was dreaming it. Her father and herself had always gotten along, moreso than herself and her mother. The thought of his jolly face made her eyes sting slightly, and she blinked the accused away furiously, refusing to make herself look weak. She was a queen now. She had a name to make for herself and one to live up to. That of her family's. Mournful sobs rang around the courtyard, echoed by those of the cilvillians below in the town square. Many of the were paid for, expert cryers who could shed a fake tear at even the most unimportant of things. She scoffed, gleaning the slightest comfort from the fact that many of the tears shedded out there were genuine.
She dipped her head as the priest acknowledged her wishes of preferring not to speak. The scar on her throat wasn't exactly a pretty picture, and it did nothing to help her enunciate. The disfigurement suddenly became sensitive, as if to only prove the fact that it was the worst thing that had happened to her. Well, almost. She found the she was slowly struggling to crawl out of the overwhelming depression that had settled in the pit of stomach. She had just lost her parents. Both of them, in a horrible murder. Why wasn't she hiding in her room? Why wasn't she crawling on the floor with tears streaming down her face as she called for them? She guessed that it was only a matter of time before that happened, but, for now, her parent's teachings had kicked in and helped her through it. She could grieve later. Right now, it was a matter of politics, of marraige and coronation. She listened rather absentmindedly as the funeral went on, lost in her own little world that was slowly becoming all the more darker.
But as her father said, the world was always darkest before dawn, right?
The law had stated that a woman may not claim the throne as unwed. In her father's will, (clever him for making one so soon) it specifically stated that 'in the instance that my daughter is unable to claim to claim her rightful place as queen, the throne will go to Kuroshin, she son of my beloved brother Haru.' The princess sighed sourly, deeming the situation to be the one she should first and foremost take care of. The only option she could think of was changing the laws, yet that would be blasphemy when the covenant had been standing for a century. No doubt she would have suitors calling left and right, and for the most minscule of seconds, she felt her shoulders slump in horror. She couldn't be able to handle that. She didn't expect complete aggression or domineerance from a relationship. If she did find the man to name as her king, she expected there to be trust and sensitivty, and most importantly, love. A political man who wouldn't be unwilling to help her with problems, both personal and bureaucratic. She sighed, a reluctant smile pulling on her lips as she thought of such a man. Hard to find one such as that these days, since there was so much hunger for power. She felt a rather startling surge of confidence. Her cousin was a tyrant, a power-hungry fool that he had inherited from his 'beloved' father. The Princess wouldn't allow that to happen, she wouldn't allow the citizens of her country to bow down to such an atrocious man while she stood by and done nothing. She should really order an inquisition to the both of them; their activity was quite suspicious lately.
The funeral passed by in a depressing and boring blur, her parent's ashes scattered over the blessed river that ran alongside their castle. The world was bathed in silence as the ashes drifted downstream, soon to come to a roaring waterfall that would release her kin into the beyond, wherever that was. Their remains finally going out of sight, she dipped her head as a final statement of respect, breathing out a sigh of relief she hadn't realized she was holding. The stress she felt was staggering, and the to-be queen considered it a struggle to make her way to her personal chambers, accompanied by three of her childhood servants. She ushered their concerned voices with a wave of her hand and an irritated sigh, basking in the homely silence that her room held. The girl immediately made her way to the window, staring out for a moment before she finally allowed the tears to fall.
Ji-Lin - Sorry about the wait. I forgot to check this thread.. -_- *bad admin* Anyway, I'm discussing it with Toph, so I'll get back to ASAP!
Prompts
Kaizu -You asked your best friend to do something for you. They said yes, and you waited, but your best friend still hasn't done it. How do you feel? What do you do? Remember, only write as ONE character, no others, just the one. Dig deep into your character, and don't just scratch the surface.
Kirai -Your little sister, who is between the ages of 12 and 14, is dating a much older man, who is at least 23. She claims that they are in love, and you are sure that this is not true. You are sure that he only wants her for her looks, and she tells you that they are going to take their relationship to the "next level." She has not told your parents yet, and you're afraid of what might happen. What are you going to do? Do you tell your parents or keep it a secret? How do you feel? Remember, only write as the one character, not the sister, boyfriend, mother, etc... just the one. Dig deep and don't just scratch the surface.
Kaizu sat under a cherry blossom tree. His face was red from running. Evidently Jeraz hadn't kept his promise to keep the soldiers off his trail. Was it a prank or out of spite? Kaizu maliciously thought up ways to get even. Sneaking into his house at night and setting fire to all his clothes seemed a valid option. Kaizu rested his head against the coolness of his blade. He leaned back against the tree. Then again this type of behavior wasn't typical of Jeraz, Kaizu wondered if he was in some kind of trouble. if Jeraz had lost his standing, Kaizu doubted he would have such an easy time traversing across borders. Or perhaps Jeraz was actually making it harder, Kaizu felt he had been ambushed one too many times lately. Was that something that Jeraz would do? Kaizu weighed it up in his mind. He and Jeraz had always been best friends. Since their first day at combat training, neither one well trained, both equal, they fought with a determination never to give up. Kaizu had always felt there was respect between them, maybe that wasn't enough to qualify for friendship.
Kaizu began to ponder. He had never known Jeraz to deliberately fob of a request that was this important. Either he was in trouble, or he didn't care. Kaizu stood up. He began walking. He had to confirm it, he had to know. Kaizu hated himself for what he was about to do. Jeraz could take care of himself, in fact the more Kaizu thought about it the more he was certain the entire thing was an elaborate hoax designed to annoy Kaizu. But he still had to know for sure. Regardless of the cost. It had always been his problem, if there was the slightest chance that there was some other explanation, Kaizu had to know. Regardless of the cost, he could never abandon the truth.
He began plotting, a logical series of steps to achieve his goal. Firstly he needed to get to a fire nation outpost. How would he get there? The nearest one was several miles away, walking was too slow. Perhaps a boat? He observed the landscape, wondering how far the river stretched. He thought about his actions for some time, continuously walking, never faltering. His eyes were sore, and his body screamed for rest, but Kaizu walked on, determination fueling him. He had to know the truth, plainly and simply. If it did turn out this thing was a prank to send Kaizu running from troops, he could get back at Jeraz. If it wasn't, then he could leave, let Jeraz to stew in his own juice. Jeraz was not a man who needed help to do anything.
Kaizu wondered if the truth was enough, to attempt to do what he was about to do just for the truth? If there was any concern for Jeraz, Kaizu was masking it well, even from himself. The truth had always been his guiding light, it was more than enough. He continued walking.
Kirai paced back and forth in her room deep in thought. she stared at the ground as she turned around when she walked near the wall of her room. Kirai shared this room with he sister and was fairly large. Two beds, two small work desks with homework and other papers scattered all over it. There was a lamp on each desk both the same kind. Kirai let out a sigh of frustration and slammed her fist against her desk rattling the desk lamps and making some paper fall to the floor.
Kirai could not believe it, her own sister who was only fourteen years old is with a twenty four year old. Sure the girl had dated when she was that age too but she dated a sixteen year old. Sure it was awkward because it was her best friends older brother but at least they were in the same age group. Also back then Kirai focused on looks and talents and not what mattered. Now it's the same thing for he younger sister, Kirai understood celebrity crushes or on her friends older brother in college but dating is just was crossing the line for Kirai.
Kirai then began to think more open minded, from her sister's point of view. Kirai couldn't think of anything except the older guy being a complete pedophile. The young girl reached for her cell phone to tell her parents but before she did she put it back in her pocket. Kirai didn't have the heart to tell on her little sister, it would technically be ruining her first relationship. Kirai felt miserable due to being torn apart by indecision, if she told her parents her sister would get depressed but if the relationship went on her sister could have very very bad things happen to her. Kirai even had tried getting her ex-boy friend from when she was fourteen to get the football team and beat up the man but she quickly rid the idea.
After a few minutes of weighing out the odds she called her parents and broke out the news. Kirai felt that she needed to protect her little sister from a pehdophilic man. Soon Kirai began thinking of a lecture on guys or dating, whichever one works out better. Kirai herself had some pretty nasty break ups and wanted her young sister to also experience it, not because Kirai was mean or anything, its that Kirai's sister have to learn that lesson and Kirai felt that it would be easier with a creepy older man than with someone around her age.
Ji-Lin Tsen - First of all, I want to say that your writing is really good. There were a few grammar mistakes, but other than that, no problems that I could see in regagrds to spelling and grammar. As for following the prompt... yeah, that would be a not really. I mean, you stuck more to her parents deaths instead of the real purpose of the prompt - her having to marry within 30 days or relinquish the throne to her tyranical cousin. That was there, but only in one paragraph, maybe more. We have decided to ACCEPT your prompt, but with a warning that you make sure and read people's posts more carefully, as it could cause problems when you RP if you don't.
Kaizu - Toph and I felt that, while for the most part you followed the prompt, the content itself... well, your post seemed kind of detached. I mean, in RP's, the people you RP with want to feel what you're writing. Posts that are detached can leave them seeming kind of... meaningless. Plus, your post was kind of... choppy, I guess you could say. It was very "one after the other" kind of feeling to it. You want to try to give a variety to how your write your sentences. It will make it more interesting to read. Also, there was a lot of "Kaizu" and "he" in there. Try to put some... well, variety in it by saying instead "the brown-haired boy" or "the young man" or something like that. We have decided to ACCEPT your post, BUT on a probation. We'll keep an eye on you, and if we feel that you're aren't living up to the standards we feel are necessary for the site, then we'll send you to the RPG School (Battle or Romance Training).
Kirai - I have to say the same thing I said to Kaizu. Your post also seemed to detached, and there were a lot of "Kirai" and she's. Try to put a variety on it by putting "the dark-haired girl" or "the young woman" or something like that. Your post was also kind of choppy and very "one after another" kind of feeling. Try putting a spin on how you format your sentences. Also, the actual prompt was not in there much at all. You touched upon it briefly in the second and fourth paragraphs, but other than that, it seemed to lean more towards Kirai's exprience when the prompt was about her sister, not Kirai herself. We have decided to DENY your application, as well you need a little more practice before you're ready for the site. Please go to either the Battle or Romance Training and sign-up.
Rinkotsu's Prompt -Your life is going swimmingly. You go to a good school where you're liked, have a girlfriend you adore and who adores you, friends who support you and care about you, a nice house, and a good, comfortable life. Then, all of a sudden, your parents announced that one of them has lost their job. So, in order to get a better job, they're moving, taking you with them and away from everything you know and love to live with your father's sister, who's willing to help you guys out, since one of your parents alone cannot support your whole family, and there are no available jobs in the area. What are you thinking? What do you feel? What do you want to do? No godmoding; no controlling of any other character but your own. Only the one character. Don't sell yourself short. Delve deep into your character; don't just scratch the surface.

Azurei lay on his bed, once again tossing and turning to try and become comfortable and fall asleep. It seemed he hadn't been able to for quite some time now, always having to wrestle his eyes to shut and force his brain to stop working. He sat up, the covers falling off him as he reached over to turn on the lamp next to his bed. He squinted as the light momentarily blinded him, scratching them as his pupils adjusted and he regained his vision. He assumed he wouldn't be getting to bed anytime soon, his brain refusing to stop contemplating all the recent happenings in his life. It had all been going so well, almost perfect in a way, but then bad luck just had to catch him.
He once again looked over to his night stand, pulling a folded note off of it and opening it to reveal a message from his girlfriend. He had read it several times over and he didn't know why he kept reading it, maybe to make sure that this was all real and he wasn't dreaming about the end of his life. His eyes read the whole thing but his mind only picked up the key points, the ones that struck Azurei the hardest yet ringed of the most truth. The first sentence that hit him, “Sorry Azurei, but it would never work.” and then, “You know this is for the best.” It was all he could read. He folded the note and set it back on the night stand, cupping his face in his hands.
Azurei knew people moved, he knew that eventually things would change. Bad luck existed, he rarely had it but he knew that it was there and it had come back to bite him. Why couldn't his dad just have worked harder, why did they even have to move to get a better job? Azurei was so mad, so furious yet he knew he shouldn't be. It wasn't his parents fault of course but ultimately they were making the decision to move and ruin the amazing life he had. He thought of his friends, the crazy moments they shared and the endless laughter that occurred when together. They had his back no matter what, always there for him like he was for them, but not anymore. They were being split up, distanced by the unfair hand of fate, knocking over chips as it pleases.
Azurei got out of bed, a layer of sweat from his frustration and pent up rage having formed on his body. He slowly walked out his room, heading for the kitchen so he could get some water, his throat starting to dry. He reaches for one of the cupboards and pulls out a plastic cup before walking over to the faucet. He turned on the cold water, the built in filter making the usually unappealing sink water actually quite satisfying. As he sips, his anger and frustration slowly ebbing away, he just wishes he could runaway, stay with his friends and still be close to his still reachable girlfriend. It was a pleasant thought but a unrealistic and stupid choice for him to make.
If he did something as reckless as that he would be left here to hope his friends would all support him and want to constantly have him around. No matter who it is, even a best friend, that's a lot to ask of a person and he didn't want to put that burden on someone. Azurei set the glass in the sink and then began to head back to his room, quietly so as not to wake anyone up. He entered his room and made his way back to his bed, hopping in and nestling into the covers for warmth as he once again would try to doze off and put his mind to rest. Azurei hoped that in the morning he would wake up with a new outlook on this, some kind of new clarity on the situation. So far all he had found was misery and discontentment towards the move but he knew there had to be some sort of silver lining, some ray of light in this time of darkness. As his eyes began to feel heavy and the weight forcing them to close, he thought of fate and how it was given the decision to bless or condemn Azurei. “Condemned...” Azurei whispered slightly as his eyes shut, falling asleep only to wake up to a life he didn't want and shouldn't have.

Azurei - I will say that I think you're a good writer. I could definetley feel the emotion in this post. I thought that you could have gone in a bit more detail about how he was feeling, as I felt you were sort of vague in a couple of places. I would watch out for that in the future. All in all, good job. ACCEPTED

Nikaguri - You are stuck in a cave with no foreseeable way out. How do you react? What are your feelings? What do you do? Remember, no one else but your one character, no godmodding. Dig deep into your character's pysche; don't just scratch the surface.

Darkness... The only sounds you hear are the un-rthymatic breathing of a man. He slowly slumps againsit a pillar and slowly sinks too the floor, sobs racking his body. The man's name is Nikaguri, although strange he feels like his name is his birthright and he defends that, but what good was it now... Flashbacks fly through the troubled mind of the man, His first dog... His first kiss... The day he got married... His kids... So many memories... Nikaguri drags himself along the floor of the cave, his breath getting fainter and fainter due to lack of oxygen. Another flashback and he remembers the day he entered the Marines, and the fateful day that he got this mission...
He remembers,"The seargent walking along the granite halls. yelling for the men to "Suit Up!" and "Get Ready!"... How Nikaguri fought off the enemies only to be hit in the leg and crawl into a nearby cave. His men being shot down like animals, and his friends choking on their own blood... How the enemies blew up the mouth of the cave trapping him and with no way out..." Nikaguri sighed as tears began to yet again form. His leg was infected beyond repair, and he felt life slowly ebbing from him.
Nikaguri got a thought that almost ended him. He pulled out his last knife, confused and dazed, he prepared a horrible way to die. Cutting his own tounge out... The resulting bleeding is dreadfully hard to stop. About to go through with it, a face enters into his mind. His baby girl. He looked at the knife, disgust creeping onto his face. He threw the knife againsit the wall where it made a clang as it fell to the hard floors...
"Later..."
Feeling his eyes cross, his stomach rumble and his wounds cry out in attention. Nikaguri kept on going, his family and friends needed him... With un-ending determination, he just kept crawling...
"It was said that when they found his body, 3 weeks later, his remains were clutching a picture of wife and daughter. It was impossible to pry from his fingers, so they left it there... They also said that they had never seen such a determined face...".

Nikaguri - All in all, I don't mind the dark theme, as the prompt wasn't exactly rainbows and sunshine, but... It was kind of confusing. Toph and I did not really understand it. I mean, neither of us would have known what the prompt was without reading it first, which defeats the purpose of the prompt. It was also kind of... jumpy, if you get my meaning, not smooth from paragraph to paragraph. I'm sorry, but I'm afraid we decided to DENY your exemption. Please do either the Battle or Romance Training. Thank you.

Ryari's Prompt - You're facing a life changing decision. On the one hand, you're positively giddy that this decision has presented itself -- it took you by [pleasant] surprise; on the other hand, though, it could present some problems in the immediate, or semi-near future. You're almost committed to making this choice, but not quite. Do you go through with it, despite the chance of mishap? Or do you decide to back down, maybe wait or even forget it all together? How are you feeling? What are you thinking? Remember to delve deep into character, and no godmoding like last time. -cough-
Water; Earth; Fire; Air. Long ago, the Four Nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all Four Elements, could stop them; but when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed, and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar -- an Airbender named Aang, and although his Airbending skills are great, he has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe... Aang can save the world.
