Why do you think you'd be a good player for this character?
I believe that I would be a good fit for role-playing as Tenzin for an assortment of reasons. First, Tenzin is my favorite character on TLOK and I feel like he can be extremely undervalued. In a way, I feel that Tenzin and I are similar in the sense that we are wise, but no-one ever listens to what we have to say sometimes. As a role-player of six or so years, I've found that my preference for characters has always led to the adult or the wisest person. Many characters that I have made at various ATLA sites (most of which have died) always had the defining traits of wisdom and understanding.
In terms of canon characters that I have RP'd as in the past (none here unfortunately), I found myself to prefer Iroh because it is almost as if we have the same calm attitude and wisdom that I've come to cherish. Although I have RP'd Azula in the past and to a great extent, for I enjoy portraying internal conflicts within characters. Yet, now it's time to get back to the Tenzin.
Overall, Tenzin and I have similar traits and aspects on life. Perhaps the most defining trait (which I find scary) that I've come to see is the general Air Nomadic idea that we must detach ourselves from worldly attachments. I would call it strange, but I say it is unique for one to completely detach themselves from anything. For example, in the episode where we learn of Hiroshi Sato being an Equalist, we see at the very end that Lin is injured and Tenzin is standing over her, perhaps several feet, almost seeming detached from her as to not conflict himself. So, I personally find myself a good fit to play Tenzin, although that's just my opinion at least.
Please describe your understanding of this character's personality.
Councilman Tenzin, the man who was next in line when it came to rebuilding the Air Nomads.
A rather, daunting task, but he has always managed to maintain a calm and yet serious lifestyle. This serious lifestyle had led him to be quite different than his father, Avatar Aang. Aang being a free-spirit, and Tenzin always being the quiet and observing one. Being the youngest of three children has led to him being quite serious and it has also made him extremely dedicated to rebuilding a nation that once was. He takes pride in the teachings and culture of the Air Nomads and can't stress them enough with his family or Korra for that matter. You could also say that he tends to be quite traditional with his thoughts and ideas which sometimes makes him hard to reason with.
Although he has always come off as calm, he does have a short fuse when the things he asks of are not performed or done properly. It frustrates him immensely and sometimes his wife has to set him straight so that he doesn't explode. Yet, he does have a soft side to himself, but he does not show it much. A Master such as himself shows little weakness, but if you put him in front of his father's statue, you see a whole different man. The legacy of his father always in his head and always renewing the dedication he has to Republic City and his father.
In your own words, please write your character's history, taking into account the site plot.
Being born nineteen years after the end of the Hundred Year War, Tenzin was the youngest, but perhaps the most gifted of his two siblings. He was born an Airbender and was next in line to continue the rebirth of the Air Nomads. He was very different from his two siblings who were sometimes labeled as 'overly-energetic', however he was always called 'the serious one' by both friends and family.
Being the only Airbending child of Aang and Katara, Tenzin was taught Airbending by his father. In addition to learning his bending art, his father preached the traditions and customs of their people for him to continue once he passed on. Throughout his childhood, he also befriended the daughter of Toph, Lin Bei Fong. Together, they became wonderful friends and developed a strong bond.
As his life went on, he earned his arrows. These tattoos symbolized that he had become an Airbending Master. Part of his reward was partially due to the fact that he developed a new technique of Airbending, which is known as 'the Air Cycle'. Although, as he grew, so did his relationship with Lin, with the pair engaging in a relationship at some point during early adulthood, but only for it to eventually fall apart with the introduction of Pema into his life.
However, prior to Tenzin and Lin splitting up and Tenzin getting married to Pema, his father passed, and so the new Avatar was born. A waterbender. Six years later, Pema would have the first of three airbending children. Jinora, Ikki, and Meelo. The death of his father also led to Tenzin taking over the position of Councilman and Representative of the Air Nomads on the United Republic Council.
Eventually he would learn that the new Avatar was from the Southern Water Tribe and after several years he would travel to the South Pole only to offer disappointing news to the Avatar, Korra. Republic City was dealing with a potential revolution because non-benders were upset at how benders took advantage of them and if Tenzin were to leave Air Temple Island, but most importantly, Republic City, then who would attempt to keep everything in order? He Informed Korra that her Airbending training had to wait until the city was peaceful once more.
Sadly, he returned to Air Temple Island, but he found that Korra had neglected to follow his instructions and after finding herself getting in trouble with the police he was determined to send her home, but a sudden change of heart prompted him to allow her to stay at the island to begin her training. From there, her training began, but it only led to frustration on both their parts and the destruction of sacred Air Nomad Artifacts.
In addition to the frustration Tenzin was suffering with Korra's stubborn personality, she took part in Republic City's Pro-bending Competition, competing with the 'Fire Ferrets'. Determined to drag her away from the competition after hearing her actions on a radio, she once again did not listen to him, and after having his demands rejected, he stayed to watch Korra compete. However, he soon learned that Pro-bending was the tool she needed in order to learn the basics of Airbending.
Although, Tenzin does not approve of her competing, he believes it is indeed for the best and after apologizing to each other, he permitted Korra to continue her Pro-Bending career. Yet, Korra's actions are the least of what troubles him. An organization, who call themselves 'The Equalists' are looking to empower non-benders to rise up against the bending population. Their leader is a man who's name is Amon, but he is a man Tenzin knows little about. For now, he can only hide the truth from Korra and how it seems the Republic City is crumbling from the inside out.
Anything else you'd like to add?
Tenzin earned his arrows by inventing the Airbending technique which is informally called an 'Air-Cycle' or an 'Air-Wheel'. It is a significantly modified version of Aang's air scooter.
Roleplay Sample:
Tenzin stood at the meditation pavilion of the island gazing out at the vastness of ocean that surrounded it. Seventeen years. The last time he had ever seen his father. A calm ocean breeze came sweeping through the pavilion, his robes swayed back and forth. It was night’s like these when he managed to get some alone time after dinner to think by himself. No children, no wife, no Korra. ‘Peace and quiet.’ He thought as he took a step or two forward and put his hands on the railing of the pavilion, leaning over a little to take a look down the cliff.
Whenever he came here by himself, he usually did some deep thinking. Pondering on questions that he hoped he could answer himself, thinking about the future of his children should this war get out of hand, and the future of Republic City. If only his father were still here, he would know what to do. However, Tenzin knew that it was better that he not rely on others to solve his problems.
“Its become so much harder without you here, father.” Tenzin murmured in a low, soft voice. He wasn’t speaking to anyone in particular, but he hoped that his father would hear him. Tenzin yearned for the ability to go in and out of the Spirit World, but he knew that the only person able to do that was Korra. A single tear fell from his eye which he wiped away with his wrist. For once, Tenzin felt weak.
“I need your guidance.” He called out, speaking to the night sky. Guidance was what he sometimes needed, even for his age. Not even Pema could offer good enough insight to quell his internal conflicts. He stood there, his mind wandering, and his emotions churning. It seemed that his family were the only ones that kept him sane.
